Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

We spent yesterday in State College, learning how to grade eggs, carcasses and compare production layers. What a long drive! While I was gone, DH sent this pic of the Three Amigos Elvis, Egan, and Eva. Doesn't Egan have the best eyes? LOVE that face!

with all this rain...............I have never had a muddier run.................its really really gross!

and it smells!

I feel sorry for the girls and have extended a different area for them............but we are still gonna get more rain tonite.............

what do you all do in these circumstances........

I do let them free range all over the yard for 1 hour but that's only one hour...............poor girls.............

perhaps I really really do need a better rough situation................

anything I could add to the mud to improve the situation ( now if this is a set up for funky ideas)

Lisa:

I have expanded my grow out area to 18x18 and have a tarp, 11x7 positioned to cover the coop and a small section...they run under there for shade and to keep dry...(only place to throw scratch on a day like today)....for the big girls, 1/2 the run has a tarp, but if it gets really wet, they go under the coop....

my grow out pen is nasty too..its wet and smells...I have begun to get some of the little ones integrated with the big girls, and hope that will help....I do have perch in the grow out but have yet to see a bird on it.....

on the good side, the rain will wash all the poo into the soil....and that my help the smell somewhat...I intend to use mulched leaves in the fall and have a compost situation in the pen....my two cents....

I do have some logs or branches in there for them to stand on............but really the mud is really swampy..........worst ever!

I do have a bag of leaves still available............yet I was a little worried about adding these to the mix........................would it get all moldy and fungus filled if we have a warm up.........

I am hoping some sun on Saturday and sunday might help................

the chickens themselves have very muddy feet and splashed mud on their faces and combs too! yuck

hope this changes soon!

Why do people frown upon straw in the run? (Just curious). Does anyone know a good place to get raw milk that isn't crazy expensive?

Mine are all swampy and smelly too. Too much rain and It is going to rain again tomorrow. :( My girls go out in the mud anyway.

From my experiance straw stinks really bad when it gets wet and starts to decompose.

The tree frogs have been chirping and shrilling all night and day and still going strong now!!! Argh, they kept me up last night. I hope I can sleep, they are sooooo loud. Even with the windows closed.

I have two external pips!! I don't think I'm going to be sleeping tonight. This is my first incubator hatch.
