I thought the snow would prevent Niamh from roosting in the grape vines tonight.

The grapevines melted clear today.

my new ones do this too. And they have taken over the pine tree in the front yard. They bend all the limbs down with their pudgy little bodies. They climb up it, as high as they can go.

My only problem with that is the banana paste says it’s expired. Mom said medicine can sometimes be used after its expiration date, but when we looked it up, it said it’s better to not use this. I’m not sure if she already threw it away or not.
All this stuff is stressing me out. They wouldn’t have gotten sick if my ag teacher had let me move them into the coop where her chickens were a few weeks ago. But no, instead they had to be stuck in a tiny coop with their own crap as bedding practically.
I don’t want to blame her, but my friend and I had talked to her about this sorta stuff multiple times and she did nothing.

Hmmm the date on that bottle pictured is July 2 2024. So...that doesn't seem that old. My opinion is I'd use it, rather than wait until Friday late in the day, because it's not that old and I think it will likely help. Coccidiosis can kill young chicks fast, maybe not so fast with 12 week old pullets? Did your friend notice the poops were bloody for a few days?

If you don't trust it, get some new. If it is going to delay treatment to get new then start with the old. Get something in them quickly. Even partial effectiveness is better than none.

I would not worry too much about the expiration date. The dose is 1ml/kg day one and.0.5 ml/kg days 2-5 for chickens. Have you given meds to a chicken before via syringe orally?

Same thing here. In an ideal world yes we want fresh. In the real world I don't think one year is going to make that much difference.

Also - I'm not sure how long off the top of my head cocci take to get going in a bird, but it may be they actually picked it up from when they got into the bigger better run, where other chickens had been, and onto real soil, where the cysts hang out. Inside a tiny coop where it's only themselves, that's kind of a quarantined situation when it comes to the soil. But outside where lots of other chickens have been pooping, that soil likely has cocci in it.

You just need to get them through this exposure, then they will have a general resistance to getting real sick with it.

They are three months old. Hatched September 2nd.

That's not really old. They can go downhill quickly when they are that young. Please be sure to start treatment on Friday.

@Pastel the Rooster Also, have they been on medicated feed during this time? Possibly that wouldn't fend off a heavy infestation/ingestion of tons of cysts, I don't know. But generally it helps them fight it off well enough until they build their own resistance.
My point is maybe it's not coccidiosis. But treating for that right now won't hurt them.

Could @Pastel the Rooster start them with the banana paste and see how they do? My understanding of what you wrote earlier is to go with what is on hand rather than waiting until Friday. The paste is once per day dosage which is not too hard hopefully. Sometimes with chickens a rapid response with a lesser med is better than waiting, right? Seems to me it could buy time. And if the Corid is needed later because this isn't effective enough there's time to buy it in the next few days.

This would work but @Pastel the Rooster can't get to the chicken until Friday anyway. Might as well go with new corid.

It's OK. Get some new corid and get started treating them on Friday. Just make certain they are drinking. If any are not drinking well, dose them orally with the corid to start.

This is accurate. Get them through initial exposure and they will be much more resistant moving forward.

I never thought about medicated feed. Good question.
