Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Most of our layers and roosters have names, we have about 25 or 30 right now... but they usually are due to some behavior or physical characteristic and the names were given over a long period of time....in reality it makes it easier for DH and I to discuss things which need done with individuals.... it has been handy to be able to identify which broody we are talking about when something happens such as egg additions or removals and chicks hatched or lost. We don't name any of the chicks which are destined for sale or freezer, though we do identify them by broody and breed/sex. A number of our hens weren't named until they went broody... we use colored zip ties to tell them apart, so often it was 'red/left' or 'green/right' and the names came later. Our roosters actually respond to their names! LOL .... so they know who is getting yelled at!

We don't name the meat birds at all, but usually refer to them as the sumos... and further differentiate based on size... mini, small, medium or big guy/girl....again it is done to facilitate phone conversations about health issues or activities, behaviors. (since I am gone for 24 hours at a time a few times a week)

Even after all this time on BYC, this still baffles me.

I am glad that so many people have backyard flocks, but I have a hard time relating sometimes.
For me it is a working farm and livestock is just that..livestock...
Are these names that just come to you or does the bird do something that itgets those names......In my world, dinner is a name....

I really. Am not cold hearted, I just live in a very different lifestyle than most on here...

you are not cold hearted :) for us, we name them because until they stop laying they're basically pets and it makes it more fun for us and the kids. Some are named for their coloring (like sugar, Maple, and Blue) others were just cute names that we thought would fit or that are themed (Lily & Daisy, Cookie & Chip). Well eventually be getting meat birds also and they will not be named. I've actually been told that I'm not allowed to help care for them lol. I get too attached.

I just wanted to share with everyone. A week ago I was terrified to let everyone out to free range at all, Even for an hour or so. Well I'm happy to report that the past two days, I've left them out almost all day :) they live every minute ams come flying and jumping out the door when it opens. Every night, they're in bed by 8:00.

One of my silkies was practicing singing the egg song the other day, my golden comets and one of my wyandottes are looking rather pink around the face, and every one if my nest boxes looks like it's been explored and rearranged lol.

Not true! You are cold hearted! You know I'm teasing!

I named one, OK SO did. Had one hem the favorite who got hurt and spent a week in the house getting special treatment. Ended up wearing an apron for protection and it happened to have a cat design on it. Ever since she has been Kitty.
My cat, on the other hand, is named after a cartoon skunk.
Yeah, I'm not right.

Eta: none of the rabbits have names. Unless barbecue or stew count.

awesome!!

Wing, these are just for eggs, dinner maybe in a few years. My family has a lovely story about the steer my PopPop raised for the beef. My grandmother was a city girl. The girls (Mom and 2 aunts) had a blast telling her how good "Henry" tasted every time they ate him. But then again, my mom used to go to the slaughter house to watch for fun. eh, it was the Depression. If I have to eat the girls to survive, bye, bye, birdie. The names came when they were not even in my house for 6 hours. Sister named two (Vicki & Serena), niece named two (Bridget and Mabel), one was named after a little girl who wanted to name her something like beautifulgirl (Niko), and Colleen was named after a friend who hates chickens. Well, she did hate them. Now she kinda likes "her" chicken.

my couch grew extra feet...

and to keep it all in the chicken realm...all the girls are out in the run tonight..I think they are finally "cooling-off"...Cordon is still questionable, but the other two are good to go now, just have to wait for them to start the egg production again...this is Cordon..

Ginger, she had been broody for almost 2 months..

Hen-Bree, the first to go broody. The lucky one who got the chicks.

Atilla(BLRW)-went broody-then thought better of it...Babs(Partridge), watching the whole craziness from afar...

Chicka- the very crazy Marans that will find a way to break out anyone in solitary...

..okay, all that "white stuff" in the cornish & turkey pen is feathers....just had to say that, cause it's not poo, although there is poo, that is not.

...I really didn't have to explain that did I?...oh-well, there you go.
Hey guys, check this out!! We have these "eggs" from Praying Mantis. DH as been collecting them for me, then we put them in specific areas to hatch...we have seen such tiny ones..it is amazing. I will try to get a photo of them..they are very hard to spot! We saw on ebay people were selling these eggs for $15.oo a piece!! Nuts huh?!...We have 5 of them so far, I think we will keep'em in our yard!

Wing:

I think folks like us with small flocks view our birds as pets....and if the flock is small you tend to get to know each chook on an individual basis...in your instance, its tough to individualize with 50-100 birds....and since you do process, inherently...you don't view individual chooks like us backyarders....isn't a matter of cold hearted at all....wouldn't eat my pet pooch, ,,,but if I decided to raise some meaties....game on.....its all perstective
