Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Pile them up and bring them over! My ducks will eat them. : )
I got tons of them, yuck. You can have them all!!!

Update on my broodie and her eggs. Out of the 9 she was sitting on 6 hatched and I seen a pip in the one egg. They were supposed to hatch today, some hatched yesterday. I hope the other 3 will hatch tomorrow. I accidentally killed one chick. I was in a hurry to get back to the school to get my son from football, not knowing how the traffic was going to be. I went to check on the babies and gather any eggs and I heard a baby crying. I couldn't find it. Somehow it managed to get out of the coop and down 2 feet and land into the mud and get stuck! Lucky for me the older hens left it alone.

I took our cat carrier and cleaned it out and put in woodchips and grabbed momma and her babies and the eggs and put them in. Brought them into the house and put a chick waterer in the box with them and left for my son. Came home and made dinner and ate. Decided that we could use the old rabbit hutch we picked up for free to put momma in with her babies to keep them safe and give them more room. I grabbed the cat carrier and brought them out and went to grab everyone and move them and found a chick dead in the waterer. i feel horrible. I added alot of rocks in the water so that shouldn't happen again.

Our school has football practice all year round. The only month they don't practice is in December! Right now they have practice from 2:30 to 6pm.

My chickens won't touch the caterpillars :( I don't know if they taste funny to them or what. My Guineas won't eat them either

Where is the photo contest?
It's the one where they pick a photo, then people have to make a quote to go with it...some of them are really good!! Last time I saw it it was on the "home" page....I have the thread in my "subscriptions"..if you'd like to jump to there from it, go right ahead!! Every now & then I will submitt a pic..one of mine was actually pick for quotation....you only "win" something if you have the best quote though....it is still neat to have people having fun with your photo...
I have mixed turkeys at the moment and serama, but they quit laying. They are very finicky birds.
I have 6 hens..I is now sitting on 5 eggs, there was 6, but unfortunately she broke one trying to move it. 2 are still "working" on egg laying(they were broody-but not anymore), & three are actually laying, BUT..I am only getting 1 egg the last two days now

...I want my hens back..what the heck happened this season?!

....and we have 2 cornishx & 1 turkey...soon to be only 1 turkey.
Tonight I'm moving 25 five-week old chicks from the extra duck pen I've housed them in temporarily for the last two weeks and into the big chicken coop tonight. My ducks are becoming a bit more territorial and today was the first time they harassed the chicks a bit. It's because the older chickens have been coming around more near the ducks, I think.

It was my intention to move the chicks out anyway during the dark moon so tonight will be the night!

Good Luck with the big-move!!

I had a chick drown and I still feel really bad about it. Now I take special care that never happens again. It's all I can do to think it didn't die in vain.

And telling this might help others to the same resolve without the need to gain that experience the way we did.

I bought a quail waterer for the bantams and other small chicks. They only need it for a few days. Also, I don't put any water in the brooder until they are all dried off and sure footed.

I'm sorry for both of your chick drownings, it would stick with me too. I'll definitely remember this post and utilize it for the fall when we try hatching some chicks with a borrowed incubator. I wouldn't have thought about it being a possibility as I've got zero experience with chicks.

It helped me to remember that chicks are shipped without food or water and endure that for 2 - 3 days sometimes. I never make them wait that long, but I'm no longer in a hurry to put in the waterer or feeder. I scatter some feed on the paper towel and they learn to peck at it in the first day. They then peck at about anything and the feed and water are no problem when I add them on the second day. I've not had any problems since I started that policy.

This week was a very nice hatch. Among them I have 6 pullets that I am "loaning" to a family with 5 kids. Their job is to spoil those chicks so they are very tame. The kids get such a kick out of that "job". Imagine them telling their friends what they did over summer vacation! I love kids and chicks and they mix so well. I tell the moms that chicks really can't be over handled, the more they carry them around and socialize them the happier they seem (both the chicks and the kids).

Sorry to hear you had some loses....I do agree with making chooks people friendly....makes for a better backyard!!!.....

Will have to work on coop tomorrow - the weekend is booked. Going to the Celtic Fling at the PA Renn Faire on Saturday and a picnic at my Mom in Law's on Sunday. Got the dog's outfit ready for Saturday.

I put the water in because it was very hot and momma is with them. She needed water and I didn't want her not to have access to water. :( I just have to hope they will be ok tonight. i put a butt load of rocks in the chick waterer so I hope they will be ok. I can't wait to see if I will have 3 more chicks tomorrow. They are babies and need to be worried about. Momma will take good care of them. She bit me like 20 times today lol.
