Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Awesome!!   I am so glad it went well!  :highfive:
You'll be looking to do a lot more of them next time...  I'm sure it's partly a mental thing... but there is just something so much more satisfying about eating something you know you were responsible for from start to finish!

I'm so impressed with you who do your own processing. I had to help my daddy as a tot and I still can't get the smell outta my nose
Last year I bartered with the Amish. For every 5 of mine they processed - they kept one. It worked out well.
I may need to rethink that. Though if I start selling the meat. ...

My daughter hates the smell also, she chews a strong smelling gum while helping.....

Just a thought to try.

Makes me sad to think she might be in pain. It's encouraging to me to know how much dogs thrive on love. I'm in close contact with several older dogs, they have various illnesses related to getting old, but they are so delighted to be with their families I think it's a good trade for them. I love dogs and am glad you share your life with one, she's lucky to have your family to be part of.
X2!
Very tempting, if only I was so overrun with chickens now. I really want to free range some muscovies to eat bugs. I fear for the hens sitting in secret places and getting eaten by foxes, That seems the ultimate fate of anything we free range (except the big, ugly roos - I suppose they are too onery and tough for the foxes). What I'm really hoping for is black east indies when yours start laying. I picture my daughter (who loves ducklings) hatching these with my grandsons and working from birth to get them very tame before going to the farm as pets. :love Think that's possible?
Sounds possible to get them them very tame, but to get them back after they have been loved on and named.... You make be asking a bit much.
Hello all, hope everyone is having a wonderful 4th of July weekend!!! I am 100 posts behind, so just want to put a few pics up of our processed birds from Tuesday...we were so happy with them. The entire process went very well. We have no-issues in doing this, (cornish X), again next year!! They were dressed at approx: 6-61/2 & 7-71/2 pounds, (1 lb.. difference between the two). We will be getting a more appropriate scale for next time also. We would like better-specific weights. Have a great day ALL:frow Just like the store..but BETTER!!! The pics do not do them justice..they had such a wonderful coloring to them.
Wow! Awesome job! I'm so impressed! I'm sure this is a start to many years of successful processing.

What a great picture!!!
I have a silly question, can a meat chicken be used as a layer? Since I know myself and could never process one of my girls...was just wondering if there are people like me who had the intention of using their meaties for food but couldn't go through the final processing. Do these hens lay decent eggs??

The unfortunate thing about Cornish cross meat birds is that they eventually put on so much weight that they either can't walk any more or they break their legs trying to move. The 4h market bird project suggests 8 - 10 weeks and then slaughter at max. I've gone 12, but that was on a lower protein feed so they developed slower. These birds are bred to be slaughtered for meat , IMHO trying to keep them for layers would be cruel because they'd injure themselves before they started laying.

thank you! And no questions are silly...This is our first year, what I've read is that getting eggs from meat birds requires restricting feed, I don't think I would want to do this sort of thing. If you can't bare to eat your meat birds, could you give or sell them to someone else? This could help you avoid their health issues as well as restricting feed. DHetzel, THANK YOU!! We now have some broccoli! I followed your advice and cut off the lower leaves to stress the plant. Now I just hope it hurries up and matures so I can harvest before the bugs do.

Just putting this out there.

For those that want to buy farm fresh meat instead of raising it.
I have a batch of 50 Cornish broilers going in on the 14th, will be starting the processing around labor day and after.

None of these are presold so I thought I would offer here first.
