I free range too, but won't they still fight? And you're welcome to ALL of my cockerels. I only have two right now.

The losers are chased away, not killed, at least by the victors, though being kept on the outskirts of the chicken population is a good place to wind up as fox food. Many of the roos I free range simply disappear, but better options have not appeared as yet. I'm not sure this is optimal, I think I'm selecting for the meanest and orneriest roos this way, but they don't sire many chicks so I guess it doesn't matter. None of the free range roos turn people aggressive, if they do they can be easily caught and dispatched, so we would definitely get that out of the population.

I wonder if someone could give me advice. I am renovating a playhouse to a chicken coop.i have noticed that most coops have small gaps between the boards. My hubby wants to caulk the gaps. He is afraid there would be drafts to chill the girls. Should we caulk or leave alone? Will there be drafts between the boards?

.... this is odd but I think one of my silkies may be one of the first to lay an egg lol. I'm impatiently waiting (everyone's 17 weeks old tomorrow) and a couple of my girls are squatting when I touch their back but none like my Cloud. Her wattles have grown in rather large over the past couple weeks, she practiced singing the egg song a week or two ago and today, I managed to get my hand on her back and she immediately squatted to the ground, wings out a bit, tail up. Usually the silkies don't let me touch them. Just sharing :) I'm on egg watch. I'm ready lol

Girlfriend, I am on SUPER egg watch! My girls are about 19 weeks old I think and are going to start any day. We have nice wattles on everyone, squatting all the time when approached, and practicing of the egg song. Sometimes they join my other two older girls who are already laying when they sing an egg song. I have also seen them digging around and investigating the nesting boxes. Everyday I am looking, and if I hear an egg song, I immediately go looking to see who is singing and why. Haha! I can't wait! My bantam girls lay consistently but they are tiny eggs. I have hungry neighbors, family and friends!

Most coops need ventilation more than being "draft free". I wouldn't think much of a draft will happen there, but I can't say for sure. If there are large gaps on the side of the prevailing winds, and they are up where the chickens will be roosting, I'd close them off, otherwise leave them be. You can always lean something against the outside during the worst part of winter if you think it's a problem.

lol, it's terrible! These are my first so I'm ecstatic! I've never had chickens before lol. I've been watching their every move move. And..... one of my EEs just took off running, happily singing the egg song lol. No egg yet.

Hello my fellow chicken people!
I've been researching a bunch of questions about broody hens (I've only ever had one, and another that gave up half way through). What it seems like it comes down to is you let nature take it's course and mama chickens know what they are doing (usually!). I've come to realize that the older i get, the less patients i have.

I've got two Dominiques sitting on eggs, these two are the only ones left out of my original 8- they will be two this year. They never go anywhere without each other or do anything without the other one, so since one is sitting i think the other thought it was a good idea too. I'm not complaining. I have to stop myself from fussing with them and looking at them all the time, they've actually started to hiss as soon as they hear my voice. Oops. One keeps getting off the nest, i have to refrain from tracking her down and boxing her in the dang nest. The other is sitting on wwaayyyy too many eggs (or so i think), last time i got a look there were like 12. I plan on candling the eggs tonight, but i'll be honest i have no idea what i'm looking for. It's going on 3 weeks, so i assume it would be dark because the chick is so advanced. On another note, maybe i should just leave her alone. In other news - it seems as though my laced wyandottes aren't growing. I know they are a dual breed, again it must be the patients thing.

Hope everyone is happy and healthy!

12 eggs is a good amount. I recently had a hen on 17 eggs, and she hatched them all.
