My Wyandotte girl who is recovering from a predator attack does not look good, I thought maybe she had gangrene, but someone suggested to me what I see may be bruising. Poor thing.

On another note, we bled 35 chickens yesterday, MAN that is some hard work! But I'm getting a little better at it. Happiness is a full syringe after the first stick.[/COLOR]

Hey B:

Get some neosporine on the wyandotte's wounds...works wonders(imho)...ever get a handle on the preditor?

Catching 35 free rangeing chooks is impossible....I can imagine kaos.....I'd suggest a cold beer on your back porch...and waiting on a sunset....

Catching them is definitely the hardest part. We gather the birds before letting them out for the day, also before the heat makes it too stressful for the birds (and people).

Didn't catch the predator, but did put triple antibiotic ointment on her and blue coated. She's doing better tonight.

Is he showing signs of respiratory distress? What's his crop like?

no respiratory distress at all

His crop looked good

My daughter just went outside to play and came running in to tell me he was dead :hit .   I'll just have to keep a close eye on the other birds -- their water is dosed with nutridrench now and I mixed medicated feed into their food just in case.

This is so sad. I'm sorry. I take my birds for necropsy at New Bolton center, you would be surprised how often birds die without having something contagious. I hope that's the case for you.

@auroradream, congrats on the first egg!!! Nothing like it. I love that you compared to the store bought and posted the pics too. Kudos!

I love Neosporin, though in chickens my understanding is that it needs to be the 'non pain relieving' version of it... apparently chickens can't handle to pain reliever drug?
I'm with you on the impossible chook collection! Definitely wait till roost time!
All:

Just a heads up on hawks...had one crash through the trees after a squirrel around 60' up a tree, missed and chased it down the trunk about 20' and flew off....I watched from my deck thinking if I wasn't sitting there maybe the chooks would've been the target???

Glad you were there! I imagine a hawk wouldn't turn down the opportunity at all! We have been so lucky so far with them, and I always credited the heavy tree cover... but will pay closer attention now!
Sorry to be a thread hog, you may just call me Danielle

hhmmmmm.... I've stuck needles into tiny veins for 27 years, maybe I should switch careers and run around doing it for chickens instead! ... sad part is that most folks would probably appreciate my efforts more than they do now.

I am also clueless, How can anyone tend animals and a garden, and still have fingernails like that?....

I'm with you Wing... I can't keep fingernails decent for an entire day, even! I am a total loss in the 'girl' department when it comes to nails

Thanks! That's fine with me lol. Make it easier to decide what I need to bring but someone else will have to bring the taco dip or lemon lush from now on. Those are my regulars lol.

Now the lemon lush sounds like something my hubby would like! More info please?

I'm so sorry, what a hard loss :(

I convinced my husband before we started this chicken adventure that I wouldn't get too attached to the chickens and I understand that there WILL be losses. I thought I'd be fine, but at only a week in I got myself attached to a particular chick and we lost her. She was one of the last to hatch and had curled toes and a splayed leg. She really wasn't getting around the brooder much to eat or drink so I hand fed her the Sav-A-Chick electrolyte water with a little dropper and read up here about fixing her leg/foot problems. I did the little bandaid hobbles/leg brace and chick shoes, helped her get some exercise standing up and picked her up 25x a day whenever she'd fall over and not be able to right herself with her big duck feet shoes. After 2 days I took off the shoes and she was finally walking around and eating/drinking on her own. The next day she got the hobbles/leg brace off on her own and she was RUNNING with the other chicks, I was so proud of myself as a chicken mama that I was able to fix her feet! The very next day our heat lamp broke. I couldn't get to the store for a new bulb and it was several hours until DH could get home with one. It was the same temp outside that day as inside, so I couldn't even take them outside to keep warm. I didn't realize how quickly the 70 degree temp would affect them and my Henny Penny was much smaller than the other chicks who had been eating since day 1. By the time I noticed her in distress it was too late. It finally occurred to me put a heating pad in with the chicks and they all immediately snuggled up to it... they hadn't huddled together for warmth before that so I assumed it wasn't bothering them :( I totally cried at Henny Penny's loss, I'm think I'm going to be in trouble as these chicks get older and I get more attached to others in the flock.
I'm sorry you had to go through that... but really appreciate your willingness to share so that others can learn and understand that their sadness is understood and shared. it helps so much to know that others know what we are going through...

Beets!!!
No matter how I prepare the green tops, I can not bring myself to like them,,,,I also hate to waste...
Anyone know if chickens can have them.

I don't know if they can or not, though I believe sugar beets are often fed to larger livestock. My only known use for them is in pickling... and even then it is just something I add to pickled eggs. My son and husband will both eat them, but they aren't for me.
So sorry for your loss.

X2!
I can't imagine the mess they would make!

Blarney, they probably used a gel Polish. You will need to soak some cotton balls with pure acetone and pop them on your nails with foil wrapped around your finger tips. In about 10 minutes it should start flaking off. You can gently push the remnants off with a cuticle pusher, but be gentle to not damage your nails and do not scrape. Good luck!
Now if you could tell me a cure for soft nails I would love you for ever!! My nails bend right over and either peel or break as soon as they are past my fingertips... super soft! It doesn't help that I am pretty horrible to my hands on a day to day basis with chores...my hands always look ragged...

I kept meaning to buy some syringes for the different medicines that can be shot into a chicken's mouth (minus the needle). I am glad now I didn't. I was looking for something in the medicine cabinet, and found a stash of syringes perfect for the medicines. I also found a bunch of other stuff I will never use. An Epi pen (expensive. Too bad I don't know anyone with a bad allergy to anything) disposable blood pressure cuffs, saline filled syringes and heparin filled syringes. Again, no need for those. What a shame.
In more interesting news, I have not only managed to not hatch out any chicks this year, but not one hen has gone broody. That one shocks me. I had one hen go broody twice last year, and another three times. Maybe they are broken.

Chippy I actually did vote. I think 3 times using more than one email address. and I know I got at least two other votes for you.

Thank you sosososo much! :hugs

@MotorcycleChick, I've got a cold over the past two days, and have had a headache. I keep wanting to PM you back but my head hurts to stare at the screen too long so I get on here real quick then get off. Hopefully tomorrow.

I'm sure they are fine for chickens. Did you know that Collard Greens are just a variety of red beet that has been bred to produce all leaves and no enlarged root?
(yeah, I can't imagine why anyone would do that either - but some folk think they are tasty)

Is it legal to take trash that has been put curbside, what about in a dumpster....
I have been going every Sunday night to check on my mother and it seems that her neighborhood is very wasteful and trashy very good stuff...I do not want to end up with a ticket over a trash pile.

Tried looking it up and all I found was about private property, where does the private line stop and start.

Think of the things we could build out of someone's trash....I am not above climbing in the dumpster for an item that looks good.

I am always stopping and grabbing 2 x 4s and plywood curbside. I never considered that it might be against the law, I feel like I'm doing a public service by emptying the landfill. The trick with dumpster diving is getting back out. Just sayin.
