A little upset that I left my guard down and lost a few to a predator, including the Baby duck from a couple days ago...
Game camera caught it, but since the laptop does not work, I can only view the camera card on my cad reader...what is about knee high, a light colored brown, with darker spots on it, almost looked like a small dog, it struck just at daybreak, and hopped the fence like it wasn't even there...it looks like the hyena from the old cartoons....

Also am in the process of changing over feed for the layers, they are still getting one container of the usual ferment, and a second container of just fermented grain, they seem to be eating both and not picking anything out.
So sorry for your loss

I'm sorry for your loss. It could've been a bobcat. I know my husband saw one run across the road a few years back. They would be spotted and have no problem jumping a fence.

Sorry to hear you lost some, sounds like there wasn't much of a way to prevent it though... no matter how hard you try it just isn't always feasible or practical to 'predator proof' large areas.

my first though was hyena or jackal.... though I know they aren't native to the area they are certainly something which could have been released or escaped from an exotics keeper.
Exotic cats are certainly an option also, again, some folks get exotics as 'aren't they just adorable' babies but then can't deal with them as adults and release them because 'I just couldn't bear to see them put down'... meanwhile the animal is left out to fend for itself and possibly starve or become predator food because the person wasn't willing to follow through on their responsibility as an animal keeper.
I hope you are able to catch/kill whatever is responsible for the harm to your flock, I can imagine the frustration of dealing with the houdini type predator.

sounds awesome! I will have to prepare some for DH... as soon as he finishes the last of the cupcakes and left over birthday cake my Mom gave me today.... he will be a happy boy! LOL

I kept meaning to buy some syringes for the different medicines that can be shot into a chicken's mouth (minus the needle). I am glad now I didn't. I was looking for something in the medicine cabinet, and found a stash of syringes perfect for the medicines. I also found a bunch of other stuff I will never use. An Epi pen (expensive. Too bad I don't know anyone with a bad allergy to anything) disposable blood pressure cuffs, saline filled syringes and heparin filled syringes. Again, no need for those. What a shame.
In more interesting news, I have not only managed to not hatch out any chicks this year, but not one hen has gone broody. That one shocks me. I had one hen go broody twice last year, and another three times. Maybe they are broken.

Is it legal to take trash that has been put curbside, what about in a dumpster....
I have been going every Sunday night to check on my mother and it seems that her neighborhood is very wasteful and trashy very good stuff...I do not want to end up with a ticket over a trash pile.

Tried looking it up and all I found was about private property, where does the private line stop and start.

Think of the things we could build out of someone's trash....I am not above climbing in the dumpster for an item that looks good.

Wing:

Unless the property is posted 'no tresspassing' or the owner asks you to leave, you are not breaking the law....I know you are just itching to go dumpster diving ....lol.....

Might be a dog, a fox, or a young coyote.....so sorry that baby duck was a cutie....PS: I have seen fox jump my 4' fence without thinking twice....

Hate to see the consequences, but I hope it comes back just so I have a chance o get a better pic, the ground is dry instead of muddy, so no prints that I can find...
My brother thought it looked like a gray fox, didn't think we had them local. I am on the outskirts of mount joy, going towards land is ville, so we do have some wooded area's nearby.

you can always spread some flour or talcum powder......its only a short term alternative to try and get a print....(maybe save some unused chicken parts from a cull and bait with your cam....

We have fox here. Im a few blocks from Lancaster airport. Lots of wooded area here. Tons of hawks. I got into a turf war against a hawk two days ago. It was screaming at me and I was yelling right back while standing over my day old chicks. I was ready to take one for the team.
Hope you catch him. Or scare him a bit with a pellet gun. Wont kill him just a warning ya know.

Played that game all spring....had a nesting pair behind my property....had to go out 3-4 times a day and stand out there til they got uncomfortable with me....red tails...they screeched alot and would fly off and circle while their mate would circle overhead....I'd just stay there and they'd ultimately retreat....after their crew fledged, they took off...A couple more came in but I chased them off too....(just made hunting in my area not viable)...my two cents....

I like this idea! Never thought of the powder to get a print... it would at least give a clue to what you are dealing with and allow you to plan better on trapping and/or dispatching it.
