Best advice I can give is actually from DH. He suggests you go to this website http://www.fertrell.com/animalcareproducts.htm and look for a dealer near you. Fertrell is an organic supply company. His training is in agronomy and he used to be the field crop agent advising farmers on fields and forage crops. Anywhere from 50 - 75% of all soybeans and corn is GMO so the only way to ensure non-gmo is to go organic.

The feed I get is not custom mixed - although I've seriously thought about it. NYP is just a local mill that treats me REALLY well and buys from local farmers. They have a 20% protein layer mix that I started feeding my girls and I have to buy it in lots of 500 lbs b/c I want it bagged in 100 lb bags and they normally only do it in 50 lb bags.
Thanks for the link to their website---I looked up locations for distributors and they've got one in Meadville and a few others somewhat close by that I think I'll give a call to follow up and see what they've got in stock. Big help!

get ahold of Kinmera... she isn't too far from you over the line in NY and I believe she gets feed mixed to her specs, though I don't know if it is certified as organic.

If you find food in the central part of Pa and need transport get back to me... I am central but go to Erie nearly every weekend for camp/fishing and can easily bring a couple hundred pounds north and meet you somewhere near Lake City if it is convenient for you.
That is really awesome of you to offer to do a transport, thank you. I am hoping that Meadville or some of the other nearby distributors has some of the Fertell poultry products in stock. If they don't, I would very grateful for your assistance!

Things are really stirring up out there.... And I've got chickens to bathe for the Goshen Fair. I do NOT want to be chasing chickens around tomorrow morning, so it looks like I've got to go out in the lightening and thunder and grab me some chooks.[/COLOR]

Hey B:

Many of us illiterates don't know about the Goshen fair....going to be their if I get directions...

U funny. I'll be there Monday night, and again for the goat show, (spectator only) I'm not sure if that is Tuesday or Wednesday. Here ya go!

http://goshencountryfair.org

I got the chickens bathed and am not going to bathe the turkeys... I like this show because it is very small and only one day. Drop the chooks at 4 and we're done by 10. My grandsons are showing these guys, I sure hope they get a ribbon. The big kids have lots of ribbons in their rooms, it would be nice for the little guys to get some.

Oops, my mistake... I thought it was a custom mix. Though the link you provided should come in handy for anyone looking for organic!

Good luck with the show! Hope the tykes get some ribbons for their walls!
I had fun photographing this Goldfinch. It was very trusting and was only six feet from me.
Beautiful shot!

No predator yet, wonder if me just being there is keeping them farther away, was there at 5 am on sat, and most of last night..

LMP, is he wanting to do just 1 or 2 at a time or does he pan to set up for going lots at a time...I have some young one's right now, hatched on the 14 the, these will go out in mid sept, we should be putting in one more batch after that.

Rose, congrats on the new adventure and as for the birds, give it some time, leave the hormones calm down before doing anything drastic, you might consider cutting back to just a few, keep things simple, you know you will not feel like doing much of anything for about 8 more months.
I will ask him..just to make sure I say the correct thing....thank you Wing.
Snakes need to eat too.
second that one, I had a snake growing up...i understand your "dilemma" though...not what you had in mind...but hey, your selling them..right?!
I'm in south central PA!

Hello and Welcome!

...I do believe there are some peeps in your neck of the woods!!
For the locals or those that like to drive,
Sweet corn is ready
$3.00 a dozen.

Which brings up a question, I have no time for processing corn, how do I go about just freezing the whole ear.
OMGosh..I love Lanc.Co corn!!!! We will definitely be picking up a bunch of that stuff while we are down! ...All I have to say is PINTEREST Wing!! Yes, some people do just freeze the whole ear...I have yet to do so though I cannot knowledgeably comment.

Agreed, not as good as you would think, and it takes up so much more space. Anyone ever tried one of those circular knives that runs down the whole ear in a single pass? Seems like it might waste a lot more, since not every ear has a uniform cob diameter.
pampered chef has a tool for taking corn off the ears..works very well.

Duckling pictures. They have grown so much in 2 weeks. They are almost too big for the water dish to swim in.

Cordon is doing an excellent job with her chicks! She is showing them the ways of chicken life...
A lesson in 'dust bathing'...

Scratching lesson...rule #1..stay out of the way!!....

The other hens enjoy having the chicks around also..Cordon allows most of them to "chick-sit", she even allows the others to feed them, show them bits of such-n-such...it is really something to watch the group interact.

HELP!!
I can not understand why I am having these second thoughts of selling meat..

Explanation.

Hubby got meat Rabbits from Ray, the first litter is sold before they are even born, my dilemma is that he is selling them to a snake breeder...
Those who know me should understand why it is strange for me to even think twice about this but, I am having issue's with this..
WHY...?
I should be happy that I do not need to process them.

On a chicken note, need idea's for a new roost area, right now I have 2x4 's that are wide side up, there's 3 of these running across the coop, I am not as agile anymore and stepping over things to clean is a pain....does anyone have something that can be easily moved, or put up out of the way for cleaning..

Wing, I can understand your hesitation, it is always harder to consider something as 'meat' when it is still in the 'cute and helpless' type stage. If it helps you can consider that with the dangers out there now to snake populations it is a good thing there are folks interested in raising them. I don't want them in my coop, but they are greatly beneficial to have around and unfortunately in many areas they are being wiped out. I know that it is most likely an exotic breeder, but they do have their place in educating folks about snakes in general... so by providing a breeder a source of food you can benefit education chances about snakes and their need in the environment? I know many may argue as many 'cons' as I can 'pros'... but it may be a different view to help.
Their use as food will be natural and they won't be tortured or treated inhumanely... this is very similar to how many folks react to the eating of embryonic chicks still in eggs or the eating of black chicken meat instead of white... consider it as another type of 'ethnic preferences'

I have an idea on the roosts... I will work out some details and do it in another post though..
