Thanks wing! I thought calcium deposit too, but it was an otherwise shell-less egg. She seems to be just fine and responsive now, maybe it was just a hard lay. Is there any way to give chickens a calcium boost? Iknow I have read tums can be helpful if a chicken is egg bound, but I wonder if it would also be a decent calcium addition occasionally.

You can buy crushed oyster shells at most feed stores. Just provide it free choice to the flock. Hens will use it as needed, they seem to know...

Tree in question, I am thinking hickory nut

There's 4 tree's that are dropping these little berries that look like rabbit droppings

Close up of leaves from the unknown..

Is any of this edible?
don't know about the others but the last one is a hickory nut tree, you lucky devil, i love these nuts, milder than a walnut but along the same lines, i sit at night and shell while watching tv

you can buy liquid calcium and add to water, just have to watch and not over dose, i forget where i used to buy liquid calcium but i use to get it for my inside birds. i know, not much help

OK, so as I investigate the property for edible's so far I have 3 black walnut tree's, this hickory nut tree, and I am told the side yard has 3 silver maple( not sure which one's) ..

Will the hickory nut grow another nut tree if planted, or is that wishful thinking? May not benefit me, but a future generation might like it.

Also found some bushes that looked like they had some kind of berries on at one time.

A Harris Hawk got my Rooster yesterday before we could get a top on the new outside run. Luckily my son was there when it landed in the pen. He came and told us immediately. We were able to scare hawk away before he did too much damage. We fixed the roo up last night with antibiotics and gauze and he is back with his girls that he saved. Apparently the roo stayed untill his girls were safe in the pen then walked towards the hawk. He is their hero. We named him Lt. DAN.

Good name, and a good to hear your boy was up to the task....Hawks are a PIA....around me is mostly red tailed hawks...they've taken four of my chicks, but, have never gotten an adult....and since your boy is on the mend, he will be a better protector.....

i don't know if they will or not, i don't have hickory nut trees, but a friend does and he has alot of them so if you have squirrels(he does) they might start them for you, i think thats how tim got so many trees, squirrels burying them for winter and not digging them back up?

Good evening all:

Had a visit from FlowerFairey today. She has re-homed her flock with me. I'll be keeping 1/2 and 1/2 will go to a friend of mine...FF is really nice and and will be visiting with her grand kids in about a week. I am sure she is heartbroken over giving them up. I have never met a more people friendly flock...I will be posting some pics after they get settled in.

PS: FF, your leghorn girl flew the pen again, but, flew back in when the roos started paying a bit too much attention to her.....

Dheltzel, where you at, I need to know what to do with these trees, should I pick pears early and ripen them in paper, or wait till they drop....same with the walnuts, should I gather what drops early, or is that the tree's at of getting rid of bad one's?

Can the chickens have any of this, these tree's are loaded beyond what I can use.

I was offline, building chicken runs and roosts. Looks like you got a lot of good answers. I'm not a pear fan, so my knowledge of picking and eating are limited and I'll defer to the experience of others.

IDK how to tell a good walnut from a bad one until you crack it. The squirrels seem to know, so whatever they leave is probably not work cracking.
