Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Welcome! Of course you can join in. Lots of nice, fun people here - and always room for a few more.

You have a nice assortment if chickens and ducks. Did you raise them from chicks?

Thank you, we'reglad to hear it! We raised all from chicks except the Marans & the mixed bantam. We are looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Howdy from Chester Co,,,,sounds like you've got quite a crew.....and after they shake their heads, they usually ask for eggs, then it seems their only interest  in you is how the chooks are doing......

Lol! We have found this to be true! We only have 2 girls laying at the moment so we don't have many extras as we have 2 teenage sons living at home. 2 more chickens & our 2 drakes should be laying soon. Oh, & howdy to you!!!

Welcome to all the new folks. This is a really nice, helpful and fun group of enablers.

I've been hatching way too many babies this summer. Most are salmon faverolles, but some cuckoo marans and ameraucanas too. Turkey hatches have been terrible for me this year. I must have set 60 eggs, and only have 5 or 6 poults to show for it. Another non-hatching group is on lockdown. When my Swedish ducks went to live with Kinmeara, I put their remaining eggs into the bator, and have a couple ducklings. Mama scovy has been setting on a clutch for what seems like the whole summer - finally one hatched today.

Haven't been online much since starting my new job in July, since I added a thirty plus mile commute each way to my day. love the job, though.

@tmrutter3welcome to the fun! This is the best place to learn anything and everything you need to know :) this is our first year with chickens too and our family and friends gave us the eye rolls too. .. at first. Now they always ask how the feathery kids are and how many eggs we got. My parents even hike across the street at their house to check on my extra roo who found a home with their neighbors (they even sneak him treats lol)

This morning when i was taking the food out to the coop, I heard this really wierd purring noise coming from inside so I checked the nest boxes and Ariel was in the same one as Cloud and was trying to move her around and get comfy in there too, complaining about it the entire time lol. Cloud didn't say a word or move the entire time though. About 10 minutes later, I heard the most enthusiastic chorus of egg song I've ever heard! At least 6 voices were singing for a good 10 minutes straight lol. Lo and behold there were 2 eggs in that box :) I love my chickens :)

my experience is that one girl sings...the roo joins in then the rest of the girls join in....its kinda funny....because when I show up to check on things they all go quiet...

I have a question...I have a hen who lis missing feathers on her head, feathers and right above her tail feathers.. feathers on her wings look as if they are breaking off..noticed today our rooster and another hen pecking at her featherless head...what should I do?

If her head or bald spots are at all red, or bloody, put Blue Cote on her, you can buy it at Tractor Supply. I've not had a feather picker ....yet, so any advice I have has been read here on BYC. Check your protein levels to make sure it is adequate. I feed my guys 18% layer feed, but 16% is the norm. There are 'peepers' that you can put on your feather pickers too. Search 'chicken peepers' and you should find them, they are odd plastic contraptions that you adhere to your culprit's beak, it limits their vision and supposedly picking. Good luck.

I made her a saddle and going to try isolating her, The top is red, like her comb. I will get pictures of her tomorrow. I feel bad for her. I may buy a peeper for the rooster and the other hen who were pecking at her head! I read that the roosters nails may be hurting her wings also so gong to try to trim those...do I just use dog nail clippers?

Dog nail clippers will work, or any kind of shears, just make sure not to cut into the "quick" (the blood that extends into the nails where it is still growing. If you've clipped dog nails, you are already familiar with that. Roos also have spurs that can be trimmed the same way if they are too long. Spurs are rarely a problem, but can be on some roos.

Can you isolate her where she is still in sight and hearing of the others? Chickens are social, and by herself she may be under more stress than leaving her where she is.
