Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

we got a new store opened up close by, rural king , they had the cx chicks in , selling them for $1.39 each, the egg chicks were $1.99 each, thats cheap for the meat chicks i think, course everything else in there i can get from our feed mill alot cheaper but this place is really nice to walk thru AND they were giving away free popcorn and coffee to the customers, don't know if this will be a permanent thing or not, but if you get a chance, check this place out, i love going there

anyone else having trouble with the tomato's this year? i know we got a late start on the plants, but they were beautiful, have nice large green tomato's then all of a sudden, the blight hit, we had cut the lower branchs off so nothing was touching the ground too.

Everyone PLEASE tell me in not going to have egg eaters now! I found a rubber egg on the coop this morning. I only found it because it was being picked at. I think it was laid and someone stepped on it and broke it and the others started eating it. I cleaned up all the yolk mess I could find and got it out of there but I don't know if it resembled an egg when they started with it or not so I'm all worried now. I did collect 2 big brown eggs though from the nest boxes about 10 minutes before I found that so I don't know.

Also, my little banty hen Cookie went into the nest box this morning. She made a nice deep nest and laid in it for a while then started singing quite the egg song. ... but no egg. Is that normal? Is she just practicing?

She is practicing, I doubt you have egg eaters. Chickens eat eggs. The shells are calcium. It is gonna be okay!

Where is it at? I'm going to be down your way tomorrow to get more hatching eggs (another 3 broodies!!) and would like to check it out. Hhhmmm wonder if I could give one of my broodies some meaties instead of eggs??? LOL

We have a question. This is our first incubator hatch. The chick hatched at 10:30 this morning, 12 hours later

check to make sure there's not bumble foot....there's a number of threads on the 'fix'...not hard to do....my two cents....

Oh no! I didn't realize new born chicks could have bumblefoot. What should I look for? Would it be the same as adults only smaller? We have done multiple bumblefoot surgeries on our older birds, but I think I'd be afraid to try it on a tiny peep. It does seem a little bit better now, but I'll go check its feet now.
Thanks!

Hm... did it take take a long time from pip to hatch?

About 13 & a half hours. It seems to be doing a little better this morning. It's not running around, but it's somewhat standing. When it hatched it had a wet string that was still attached to the chick & the egg (umbilical cord???). I left it go until it & the chick were both dry, then hubby & I carefully snipped it off (the chick was still dragging the entire eggshell around). Other than that that it seemed like a good clean hatch.
Thanks

I give chicks that are struggling (especially those with leg issues) infant vitamins (people kind found in baby section NO IRON variety). Seems to help. Good luck.[/quote

That's a really good tip, thanks! I did give it sugar water & have some hard boiled egg in the fridge, I'll give it some after I'm sure it's drinking ok. Do you add the vitamins to the water? How many drops?
Thanks

I don't know what blight is, but my tomato stalks are turning brown & it's not looking good for getting many more. I'm not much of a garden/plant person though. Anyone have any good tomato growing tips?
Thanks!

my mom gave me a book to check out and it has a tomato blight buster recipe in it. I haven't had to try it yet but if you have the stuff maybe you could try it and see if it helps. Technically it's for newly planted tomatoes but maybe it would help established ones. Who knows (I don't have the greenest thumb so I'm guessing here lol)

3 cups compost
1/2 cup powdered nonfat milk
1/2 cup epsom salts
1 t bop baking soda

Sprinkle a handful of the mixture into each planting hole. For additional disease defense, sprinkle a little more powdered milk on top of soil after panting and repeat every few weeks throughout the growing season.

IMHO, there's no way it has bumblefoot. BF is a staph infection from a bird having a cut and then packing dirt, poop, and etc into it and it developing into a staph infection. Plus, it would still walk, just limp.

I'd say give electrolytes in a syringe two or three times a day. He should improve.
