Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thank you fisherlady! Does anyone know, will they start laying more regularly? One laid Saturday & then again on Tuesday, the other one hasn't laid since Saturday. I sure hope so, finding an an egg is like Christmas every time! Every time one of my girls lays an egg I thank them & tell them how pretty it is! (My name is tmrutter3 & I'm a chicken nerd...)

We have a question. This is our first incubator hatch. The chick hatched at 10:30 this morning, 12 hours later & it still can't stand on its legs. Is this normal?

check to make sure there's not bumble foot....there's a number of threads on the 'fix'...not hard to do....my two cents....

Talked hubby into a trip to Cabelas in Wheeling tonight. Glad I did, found a 21.5 All American pressure canner/cooker in the bargain cave and got it for $200. Got the new rod/reel combos I wanted for the boat also, along with a number of smaller items we needed. So was glad we went.

Fisher:

I have two cabelas to goto....Hamburg and one in Wilmington DE....I'm told the one in DE is 1/2 Hamburg...and I've been the the flagship store in Nebraska...its x3 Hamburg....I thought they only did the Tent sales in the early spring?

This was for the 'fall sale' Just happened to be that a lot of the things we wanted were included in the sale this time so saved probably $200/250 compared to regular prices, so made it worth the trip.
I've only been to the one in Wheeling and Hamburg, though they now opened one in NY which is only about 1.5 hours from camp, so will be an easy drive on a rainy day... will see how it compares.

Hello all! My chicken math is all wacko...
I was speaking to an Amish neighbor - who asked if I had ever considered trying to breed my own CX's. I mentioned it in passing to DH who surprised me by saying "well we already have the white rocks - all we need is to get some LF cornish to cross them with.

So it looks like I am now in the market for some LF Cornish chix. Or maybe some Cornish game chix. A little smaller but then I might also be able to sell game hen carcasses too

Sounds like your math is fine.

I have been considering trying something exactly like that in a couple years.

hubby and I have this plan also in the next year or so. It's Cornish hen with white Rock rooster correct? I think it'd be better than buying meaties all the time, just hatch your own and what you don't hatch out, you eat as eggs lol

Hm... did it take take a long time from pip to hatch?

About 13 & a half hours. It seems to be doing a little better this morning. It's not running around, but it's somewhat standing. When it hatched it had a wet string that was still attached to the chick & the egg (umbilical cord???). I left it go until it & the chick were both dry, then hubby & I carefully snipped it off (the chick was still dragging the entire eggshell around). Other than that that it seemed like a good clean hatch.
Thanks

I give chicks that are struggling (especially those with leg issues) infant vitamins (people kind found in baby section NO IRON variety). Seems to help. Good luck.

Everyone PLEASE tell me in not going to have egg eaters now! I found a rubber egg on the coop this morning. I only found it because it was being picked at. I think it was laid and someone stepped on it and broke it and the others started eating it. I cleaned up all the yolk mess I could find and got it out of there but I don't know if it resembled an egg when they started with it or not so I'm all worried now. I did collect 2 big brown eggs though from the nest boxes about 10 minutes before I found that so I don't know.

Also, my little banty hen Cookie went into the nest box this morning. She made a nice deep nest and laid in it for a while then started singing quite the egg song. ... but no egg. Is that normal? Is she just practicing?

I believe it is Cornish Rooster over white rock hen.

And I agree with you. Let the white rocks provide eggs. But I have read where Cornish roos tend to be brutes! So that might be a deciding factor. Is it worth putting up with an unruly roo most of the year.
