Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

These weren't 12 weeks old and they all survived, but the mother was 50% Oriental Game. What does this remind you of with the hot weather we're having?
What a great pic! And yes, we need reminding of what is to come....I heard on the radio today that they are expecting an extremely cold winter for us.

FisherLady, I believe Silkies are the Irish Catholics of the chicken world. ;)

I do love an EE chick but my personal favorites are BLRW chicks, something about them....they are SO cute!! I've finally got my Wyandotte breeding coop set, now just waiting for the boys to mature a little.

Warning, Warning...

When asking for beef bones at a butcher shop, just let them go ahead and think that they are for the dog, otherwise they think you are nut's...
Made the mistake of saying , I have no dog, they are for me.... took me half an hour to explain, making broth without meat.....
Seems simple to me but in today's world, guess not.

A couple years ago, we bought a half a beef and I told the processor I wanted 'all' the bones back. I ended up with 2 knuckles labeled 'soup bones'. smarty pants that I am, I called the shop and asked for the owner, then asked how the steer had been able to stand if the only bones it had were those two knuckles. They saved me a huge box of bones that I picked up the following week.

I like to cook it outside on my turkey fryer for at least 12 hours, then pressure can the stock. it's so handy when I want to make a quick soup or gravy to grab a jar of stock from the basement shelves.

People with quirky hobbies soon learn to give a "reasonable" reason, not the truth. I will never again try to explain to a butcher that the beef heart is to grind up for my tropical fish.

Come to think about it, butchers should learn just not to ask, I bet they get some insane explanations. Of course, I suppose it could be entertaining -- "hey honey, guess that I sold to this lady today . . ."

Love it!

Blarney, I'm sorry for your flystrike troubles. The little poofy-head chicken is a charming consolation, though. Polish?

If you are including Silkies then you can double the size of your existing coop... silkies take 'chicken math' to a whole new level! I have one little hen who feels it is her personal responsibility to repopulate the chicken world!

Our coop is about 8X6 with top perches the chickens sleep on at night. I am really considering silkies. Wouldn't have to worry about dealing with the incubator. I was debating of BO's or silkies.

Hi All,

I have a beautiful, rare, white frizzle cochin roo and I can't keep him - he is 5 months old +/- - I am looking for a roo friendly forever home for him. I am in Bala Cynwyd, PA just outside Philadelphia.

Love the "Irish Catholics" comparison!!! Perfect!

Honestly I haven't had any BLRW chicks to compare... and no room for them either before any offers are made!!!

DH compares them to little garden gnomes with their bushy beards.... he called me at work on evening when a recent hatch was going on and his description of one of the chicks was... 'it was born needing a razor!' LOL

Silkies are great little birds, and if you are prepared for the broodiness I don't think there is anything much more adorable to watch than a mama silkie showing her little ones around. If you are getting silkies you may want to consider a lower/wider board for them, I know ours have liked to cuddle together in a pile on the floor or on the wide board (10") we used to have for them. We now have 14" wide sand shelves to allow birds to either lay/cuddle together on the flat sand or perch on the edge boards, I simply sift the sand clean every couple of days and the birds really have seemed to enjoy them. It doubles as a great way to combine the 'poop board' and roost together and the floor stays so much cleaner.
If you are interested in sand shelves I can post some pics of the ones we did for our coop to give you a few ideas.

So it's 1:25 a.m., do you know where your chickens are? I do! Hubby woke up saying he heard chickens. Baloney, I thought! Hubby is a light sleeper and often wakes up for weird noises. He offers to check on the chickens. After. Few minutes, he's still out there so I head outside too. Three girls are outside the coop looking disturbed and two are in the coop. My biggest girl is missing, so I do a check around the fence area. I figure it would be challenging for a fox to drag a fat struggling Australorp and then squeeze her under the fence. I found her on the porch seemingly unharmed. I think the little "ramp" for them to enter the coop fell and spooked them and they couldn't get back in. Crisis averted... For tonight! Looks like we I'll be making some coop repairs this week.

Blarney, sorry for your loss!
