Silkies are great little birds, and if you are prepared for the broodiness I don't think there is anything much more adorable to watch than a mama silkie showing her little ones around. If you are getting silkies you may want to consider a lower/wider board for them, I know ours have liked to cuddle together in a pile on the floor or on the wide board (10") we used to have for them. We now have 14" wide sand shelves to allow birds to either lay/cuddle together on the flat sand or perch on the edge boards, I simply sift the sand clean every couple of days and the birds really have seemed to enjoy them. It doubles as a great way to combine the 'poop board' and roost together and the floor stays so much cleaner.
If you are interested in sand shelves I can post some pics of the ones we did for our coop to give you a few ideas.
Pictures would be great! I am not sure about letting them free range with my other chickens. I'm worried about the large breed rooster trying to breed them? our rooster is a Speckled Sussex. Also not sure how they would do with larger hens. But I'll try it and if not back up plan: coop would be 6X6 run would be 15X8. Should be plenty of room for about 6.

Hi All,

I have a beautiful, rare, white frizzle cochin roo and I can't keep him - he is 5 months old +/- - I am looking for a roo friendly forever home for him. I am in Bala Cynwyd, PA just outside Philadelphia.
Welcome to BYC!
I do hope you can find a home for him. We've already got about 6 extra cochin roos already, or I'd take him. Is he a bantam?

Warning, Warning...

When asking for beef bones at a butcher shop, just let them go ahead and think that they are for the dog, otherwise they think you are nut's...

Made the mistake of saying , I have no dog, they are for me.... took me half an hour to explain, making broth without meat.....

Seems simple to me but in today's world, guess not.

Your butcher doesn't know bones aren't just for the dogs? I'd be giving stink face if he didn't know bones make an amazing broth. I really need to find a local butcher to get beef bones that are affordable.

I lucked out. My oldest went to school to be a butcher. He is also an avid hunter & fisherman. He understands very well that there are many unusual uses for the "scraps" from butchering. He will be helping his momma send some spare roos to freezer camp this weekend & then helping with the 30 broilers I have arriving today when they are ready in about 8-10 weeks. (I bribed him with fresh meat for helping...lol)

one of my gals is not in the coop tonite...................I sure hope she turns up in the morning!

This is a first for me....................I was looking around with a flashlight for awhile...............but no luck..............

stay tuned!

Oh no, Lisa! Hope you have some good news for us today.

:gig   People with quirky hobbies soon learn to give a "reasonable" reason, not the truth. I will never again try to explain to a butcher that the beef heart is to grind up for my tropical fish.

Come to think about it, butchers should learn just not to ask, I bet they get some insane explanations. Of course, I suppose it could be entertaining -- "hey honey, guess that I sold to this lady today . . ."

Love it!

Blarney, I'm sorry for your flystrike troubles. The little poofy-head chicken is a charming consolation, though. Polish?

Yes, Toulbant Polish, we were given 4 eggs...3 hatched. I believe all 3 are boys. I should probably find a Polish thread and see what the experts think. They are 6 weeks and I'm not seeing red on their combs yet, but they all had those baldy wing coverts while feathering in, so I'm thinking cockerels.

Not to be a thread hog...but need to share. My oldest and 2 grands are living with us now and we are going through a LOT of milk. So this morning...I funneled goat milk (FREE and right in the back yard) into the milk carton in the fridge....think they'll notice?.

I grew up drinking goat's milk. My brother & I neither 1 could drink cow's milk. Several of my children had trouble with it as babies too. We are actually looking for a doe in milk because we go thru way too much as it is. My 2 youngest can polish off a gallon in less than 2 days if I don't limit them.

The only thing I remember from the goat's milk we got from my aunt as a child was that sometimes it had a bitter taste, which could have been from what the goats were eating or from the bucks having free access to the does. I may be biased tho. I just plain don't like milk regardless of the source.
