Any one know where I could pick up a few hens preferrably pullets just about to start laying! Looking for timid birds that are great egg layers! I'm just starting out and new to raising chickens!

Yes, I've used a midwife (rather than an OB) for all of my kid's births, but this was my first home birth and it was just wonderful. Having two kids already, all of my family 6 hours away in eastern PA, being an hour + away from the nearest birth center, and pretty much as low risk as one can be, a home birth just made sense. The hubs made baked ziti, the girls played outside, and I labored peacefully and comfortably in my own home. It was perfect!

Chicken duty switched over to the hubs for the next week which had me a bit worried since he wasn't very fond of them anymore (think it was resentment from all the time I spent building the coop in the few weeks prior). Thankfully they started associating him with food and running to him all excited whenever he'd come out... it really turned his opinion around and now he likes them again. It's hard to hate something that's gets so excited to see you :)
I realize this is very late..but, congrats on your new arrival!..and a "home-birth" at that!!..wow..so cool. Hope everything is going well for you and the little one!

Maggie, it's absolutely heart breaking. I hope they find a way to continue the auction. The whole building is gone. These are some pictures from Keith's FB page.

Oh my....so it was the auction arena area....with the colder weather coming, wondering how much rebuilding they are actually going to accomplish.....
I hope they do find another area to hold their auctions..that is THE biggest draw for the complex....

...
I am totally trying this tomorrow!

So I finally made a decent run that the girls can't escape from. 6 foot high fencing all around. It actually looks much better too, since the fencing is black. Do you think my girls have enough weather protection? They can either go into the coop or hang out underneath it. They were not amused at being penned up today, they only laid 3 eggs and were a bit noisier than usual. I sure hope that dies down after a day or so! They were all rushing the fence whenever they saw me. Do all your chickens do that, or is it just because mine were unhappy at being restricted?

I loved letting them free range but they were digging big holes in my grass and just leaving bare dirt. My DH would have let me go if I let it continue.

They will be able to free range after the grass grows back a little.

. And then my one girl went broody again....

And although you can't see it, there is clear fishing line run back and forth over the top of the run to deter hawks.

Mine always come to the fence too..they are just looking for hand outs...hahaha...Looks like a real nice area for them Annie!

, if chickens are good at one thing, it is tearing a yard apart!!

,..Clinton Co. here...

**Finally got the new-to-me fencing up and let the girls into the new-growth area....well, didn't take them ,but maybe 20mins. to have it all mowed down...crazy, it took weeks for that to grow & now...gone...they enjoyed the extra greens and are having a good time with more "leg-room".....the little ones can get-away better now from being picked on.

The chicks are now 9 weeks...Neither are looking "male-ish"..so fingers are still crossed that BOTH are girls

Cookie left the nest this morning to eat and everything and I found another egg in there that I had to take but I came back an hour later and she was in the wrong nest covering a plastic egg and someone else's egg. I think she may have been confused by the barrier that I added to the front of her nest box to give her some privacy. Do you think her eggs will still be ok? I moved her back to her box and she's been there the rest of the day. It was a bit chilly this morning when she was off. It's only day 2

how long can she be off the eggs without causing a problem for them?

We just had a pullet who decided to set and she often had 'nest confusion' for the first week. 2 or 3 times she was off of the nest because she got into the one beside it after then other hens had laid. She was off of it for possibly 6 hours the one day. The only thing that happened was that her eggs hatched at the end of day 21 instead of the evening of day 20 like the other hen who was given eggs the same time. Messing up isn't unusual for younger hens and is certainly a potential hazard, especially if they continue to be confused later into incubation. Luckily it seems most of ours have figured it out after the first week. If she continues to get into the wrong nest you may need to segregate her further so she only has one nest to choose from. I do not separate completely but rather set up a chicken wire barrier that can help 'funnel' the hen to the correct nest. By giving her a chick waterer in this 'funnel' area it seems they get used to stopping for water before returning to the nest and it sort of gives the young hen a target and therefore gets her into the area of the correct nest. Usually after a few days of this the hen seems to get it figured out. On the rare hen who continues to nest hop you may need to continue the funnel or even fence her off completely.

Auror:

My tandem broodies will not give up....I removed the eggs yesterday and both sat a day on in empty box....then moved today where another girl laid and egg...I gave up and gave them 5 to sit on....they are a determined pair....
