Any clues what would cause a good layer to suddenly start laying shell less eggs? One of my SLW has laid a shell less egg 2 days in a row now. I haven't changed anything, they always have access to oyster shell and she doesn't seem to be acting any different or like anything is wrong. Here is the one from today, very odd looking. This was after I scooped it out of the nest box. The yolk had been completely in tact but sitting outside the membrane. I just ended up breaking it trying to scoop it up.

Not all feather-footed breeds have the same amount of feathers. For example, Marans can have feathered feet but never enough for it to present any problems at all, but look up Bredas or Sultans to see an extreme example. It can really inhibit their ability to walk with enough feathers on their feet.
I will give those a look...Thank you for the insight!! I am not interested in birds with an over abundance of foot-feathers...

Thank you ..i did do some research, on a number of different herbs..wow, alot out there to look into!...anyway, they are saying it can be used as a wormer among other things, but to be careful with it....as with  anything, even the "natural" stuff can be harmful ....I am wondering who will be my guinea pig?:smack ....

just another thing about wormwood. it definitely is an herb to be used carefully as it can be toxic. it used to be banned at one time and just recently was allowed to be sold. have you ever heard of the liquor absinthe? that is what wormwood is. the drink was banned for a while due to numerous overdoses. i have been a practicing herbalist for years. i grow it and use it in one of my flu recipes. works like a charm. lol.

One of the few pumpkins I grew this year was, unfortunately rotting from the top down..so..it made for an unexpected treat for the girls...the enjoyed it immensely!
It works out well right now, it will only help the "worming" process along...naturally.

the "babies"...their legs have feathers, but only a few.

Chikadee..well, she likes her picture taken....she is molting around her neck..she has a seriously crazy look!! She does not have leg feathering..she was one of Chads project eggs. This girls will lay 6 eggs a week, well..she was..

..

Ginger & Cordon doing the "sort-of" mother thing...
Still no eggs from either of them, hoping they get with the program soon!

Henbree..the latest to go on the broody train...I had closed up the coop & let them all out in the run, so she didn't have to spend all day in "broody-jail"... No eggs today..what a bummer! I know they would be on "withhold", but still....

Atilla..has definitely had her share of the pumpkin!!

I am just starting out..just with the plants I have right now are mostly common herbs, a few perennials...there is a lot to learn and understand. Some of these plants are like mushrooms..they can look very similar, but have different effects..some not so good! Just going with the easy stuff now, getting familiar with them, then i will take one new plant at a time.

i would love to have one like her. she is gorgeous. if you hatch any chicks, please give me a yell.
Sadly, her chicks have almost no chance of looking like their mom. That is an unfortunate downside of the otherwise beautiful mixed breeds. They could prove to be an inspiration for a devoted geneticist to try to replicate their coloring, but that is all, they are the end of the line for their particular phenotype.

Maybe someday we will have Star Trek style tricorders we can point at a bird and it will report their exact genetic makup, then it could be replicated, either by careful breeding, or with one of them Star Trek replicators . . .

This is a very pretty mixed breed roo that runs around the farm. I love all the colors, I don't think there is any established breed that looks like that.
Another example of how it would be nice to perpetuate that look, but it's nearly impossible.
