Thanks for the info, it is all very helpful. Guess they will need a little pampering. Do you think it's okay to have them sleep in the nesting boxes?Could be both. I've never had a Silkie I would consider smart, I also think many can't see very well and that can make them feel insecure until they learn they are secure in their present circumstances. Mine flap like crazy when I pull one from the pen because they know they can't fly to catch themselves if the fall, but once I have them held securely, they settle down and endure some petting. I tell people silkies (and cochins) are the lap dogs of chickens, like shitzhus for ex. Not to offend anyone that owns one, but if you want a smart dog, get a collie or poodle. If you want a smart chicken, get a wilder type bird, like Sumatras or games. That said, silkies and cochins are among my favorites. Naturally tamer and more dependent on their human companions.
Awesome pictures! They're so cute!
Hey wingstone, whatever became of those Hemadoras you finally tracked down? With winter coming, I was thinking about the wisdom of getting the hardiest breed of chicken.
x2, pooping machinesI have a couple of these, they are perfect for quail brooding and easily washed ( baby quail are messy)
Not sure if it is considered all right, but my silkie hen's are 4 years old and still sleep in the nesting box, they seem more comfortable there so I let them, it's always the same box... the silkie roosters roost with everyone else.
Suffering from withdrawal - this is the first week I haven't had chicks hatching since February. Seems so quiet, and not in a good way![]()
