Question for you all : Will Mama hen push out any chicks that aren't doing well?

Last night on my last check in before dark, one chick who didn't seen completely dried off was separated from Mama and screaming it's head off. I quickly tucked it back under, because I don't know if she could have reached it or not. This morning, I believe that same chick was dead and out from under the broody. I'm thinking maybe it's time to bring them inside, since they will run out of room in a week and I don't have a good setup outside.

I'm sorry for your loss :( I've had this happen twice. But I think it was accidental with mine because it was right after I moved then all to a new spot. I don't think the mama will leave the others to pull one back under her so if it gets out, it's out of luck. I managed to save the two that I found since luckily I found them in time. Both were near death and cold but I brought them in and heated them under a heat lamp until they were dry then put them back under their mama. I think it just terms to happen. Both Lucky and Wynter have grown well with doting mama's afterward.

Glad to hear Lucky and Wynter made it! Did you have them outside? It was probably summer or fall when you did. That makes sense that she won't leave the others if one gets loose.

Okay, I broke down and brought Mama hen in the house. If I had the space, I would have preferred to leave her outside. But I don't have a good protected area and she is looking so pale and thin. Hopefully keeping her inside and protected will help her and the chicks. Her two last eggs were duds. One failed to develop, and the other stopped developing. All in all, not bad. 4 chicks hatched out of 6 eggs, but two had accidental deaths, I'm guessing.

actually, Wynter is 5 weeks old now. He was hatched on that REALLY REALLY cold day a few weeks ago and all the babies were named "cold" names (Wynter, Flurry, Fria). Lucky is almost 12 weeks old now so it was chilly but not quite cold then.

Wynter is the one in the back.

Heading to Harrisburg with DH. We are going to drop a few birds off at wingstone's farm and then head to Bass Pro to look around. A nice break after the hectic holiday week.

Drive safe!

Funny story: Last night when I was checking on the Mama hen with her chicks at dusk, one of the chickens was making the most unusual noise. I finally realized it was the Mama hens sister, who had not been able to lay in the nest box all day and was very upset. As I'm watching her, all of sudden, BAM! She laid an egg! I never thought I would see that as it happened. After that, of course she was fine.

Merry Christmas all !....almost time to start planning for spring....
I was just thinking that too Stake! With the warmer weather ...........for Christmas week.....................and bright sun shine................I started looking thru seeds and garden catalogs and began planning my late winter and early spring projects.

How early is late winter?

what do you all plant first?

I have a bed that I set up in the fall, next to but outside of the run.................for spinach, lettuce, leek, chard etc......
its very sunny until the trees get their leaves all in...............so I thought the early greens might do well there.

I want to plant onions too this year.

last year I did not have must yield in my potato tower...............but I still want to try again. Maybe I did not wait long enough or............?????

supposed to be easy to grow potatoes............so I gotta do it!

What do you all do for onions..............do you buy started onions?

I am ready but then again its really only dec...................................when can I start planting????
