Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

A relative of my step father trapped a raccoon with a leg trap. He kept him(?) in a teeny cage in his own filth. He was missing a paw and acted terrified and in so much pain. He put him in a dark corner of the barn. I went to see the horses when I went to a party at their place, and saw him. I fed him some bread and gave him water. He could not dip his food with one hand, or really even pick it up, so he had to eat off the floor. I begged to have the raccoon. He said no, but I could have a baby when he bred the raccoon. Is that even legal? Are people allowed to do that?
from what i understand, the dukes doesn't clamp down but just holds, the ones we caught, the leg was ok

We got home late but here's a picture of the finished apples and fruit leather (both have been sampled and approved! )

@ Free Feather, have a great time! I always bring a water bottle because the drinks are outrageously priced. $3.50 for a soda. The milkshakes are $4, but worth every penny as they are magical.

@LMP. You're going to breed your pup!? Wow! That's exciting stuff there, missy. I'm happy for you.
yep! We are excited too!! hahaha...I have been researching and learning about this for well, years. It took us awhile to find the right "girl"....hahaha, we are hoping nature is in our favor and this goes smoothly..for the dogs, for everyone. Going to have them try this time, if it happens, great...if not..we are okay with that too. There is a learning curve for the dogs too.

Howdy:

Got home from work today and found my buff orp killed by a predator...I believe she was pulled off the roost as I found some feathers near the coop door....and, I found her, sans head and neck one the other side of the yard.....I'm thinking racoon....I know there have been some around the neighborhood, but this is the first time for having one in my backyard....time to start locking down coops...do you think #6 is too small for racoon?
omgosh, so sorry for your loss Stake! Your door to the coop was open? or raccoon opened it?

I've been looking at the "dog proof coon traps" as an appealing option. I'm not much with a gun and don't want to dispatch the critters, so I'd call our resident fur trapper, but it sounds like you have that covered. I bet any size shot would work at point blank range. Plus, you can look it in the eye as you put it down for the ultimate feeling of revenge.

Most of your neighbors would appreciate you removing them,  but a few will not feel that way, so I'd keep it on the DL if I were trapping in the suburbs.

I have trapped right in town. A nice large trashcan or barrel full of water works quite well to drop the entire cage into if guns are not an option. It is considered a humane dispatch & will not get you in trouble with any authorities.

Totally illegal in Ohio & very inhumane as well. No animal should be treated that way. People can keep & breed raccoons only with a permit in Ohio. (Not sure of PA laws, but betting permits are required there too.)

Has anyone tried making their own little heating pads with corn instead of rice, I dislike the smell of the rice ones...and I have lots of corn...I have a few small ones with rice that I heat up and put in my coat pockets on really cold days, but I smell that rice on my coat for days..I spend hours at a time outside, every little thing helps.

Also does anyone have a tried and true recipe for ham loaf that comes close to the Wenger's meats brand.

I would be afraid the corn would start popping if heated.

As for hamloaf, no recipe. But my 11 yr old makes a pretty good meatloaf.
1 pound hamburger
1/2 package saltine crackers, crumbed (more if too sticky)
2 whole eggs
2 TBSP honey barbecue sauce (more if desired)

Mix all together. Place in cassarole dish. Top with glaze made of equal parts ketchup, honey barbecue & brown sugar. Bake at 350F until done all the way through. Feeds 2 adults or 1 adult & 2-3 small kids.

LMP:

Both coops and runs were open....I haven't had any troubles and have been letting the chooks come and go as they please for about 8mos. I do check them every evening and through the days when I am around....last night I had to work to 9:00p and found her when I came home....found four distinct piles of feathers when I checked around this morning...I'll be going to TSC tomorrow morning for what traps they may have and I'll be building and secure door on coop#2.(no door currently).....

I've now lost 5 of my original 6 over the past two years....the two BOs this fall/winter.....and three last winter.....

Anne & LMP, I will gladly share!

Left the Farm Show a little bit ago as the fire alarm was ringing and the building was being evacuated. I had this strong urge to run back and save the birds! My little one wanted to reach in and get the eggs out of the cages. She had so much fun on her first trip. Deciding on a few breeds I may want to add, gonna check my notes when I get home. We are already discussing the possibility of entering our slate blue turkey next year.
