I've been milking the one Shetland ewe I have and she provides enough for me. I'm not big on dairy, but I use it in coffee and puddings and such. I'm hoping this year to replace store milk with sheep milk for all of our baking/cooking and some of the cheese.

Oops.

Oh woe is me, I can't go to work tonight. I'm going to miss it so much. All the people there are the highlight of my day.

Better?

. Yep, totally believable!

How does sheep's milk taste in comparison to cow's? We are planning on getting a pair of goats eventually but I'm not a big fan of the 'goaty' flavor of goats milk. According to my sister the 'goaty' flavor intensifies the longer the milk sits, but even fresh I don't think it's something I'd enjoy drinking on it's own. A cow is too big an animal to even consider at this point, but we DO go through a lot of milk and actually go to great lengths to get good, raw milk. It would be great if there was a smaller, more easily managed animal that produced similar milk... I had never really heard of drinking sheep's milk before so I am wondering now how it compares.

I was told once to look into a dexter cow. They're much smaller than a standard size cow. Not sure if we're ever going to venture into it or not but I'd love to have my own supply of fresh, raw milk.

Jerseys are small and nicely tempered, and probably easier to find. In any case, much like eggs, that will be the most expensive milk you ever drink. If you want a cow for a pet, great!

If anyone comes to me thinking they are going to get eggs "for free", all they have to do is buy some chicks and let them run free - I quickly set them straight on that. I'm pretty sure cows are 10 times more likely to be a money hole you never get a return from.
