My pickled eggs are always purple. Use pickled beets to get purple instead of stewed beets to get red.

Busy day.... had to work over this morning to cover for boss while he was in a meeting, so didn't get home till nearly lunch, then errands and coop cleaning/chicken social time till dinner. DH requested crab cakes and perch for dinner. Am down to just a couple packs of crab meat left in freezer, will have to head back down to visit the cousins soon!

Ordered 50 meaties from the hatchery today. TSC and the local feed mill order from somewhere different (I don't know who TSC orders from this year, but an employee said it was not this particular hatchery) We may get 6 from each of them to see how they grow in comparison to the hatchery we are getting our other ones from.

If you normally use beets or beet juice then I would just add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to the juice and test the resulting color on a white paper towel. Add a bit more blue to make it darker if needed.

Why am I hatching in this weather?

I guess since they are starting to come out of the eggs, I really should get a brooder together, huh?

X2 - Back in Dec when I put eggs into the incubator, I planned it all out and though that 6 week old chicks would be fine outside in Feb with some supplemental heat. I severely underestimated the February weather, so now I have 16 CCL's over 7 weeks old still in the basement. The oldest roo has started to crow! They really must go out this weekend, at least the older ones.

I'm compulsively checking the long-range forecasts, hoping for warmer temps if I check more often. I keep telling myself "just one more week" . . .
