It's a heat wave here this morning. No 2 hour delay, hard to get used to this morning, was running late lol. Went to take care of the chickens and came in all sweaty lol. It's a balmy 16 degrees this morning instead of negative temps

Did you know that an 18 day old turkey can fly like a pigeon, right up and out of the brooder?
I do now. Luckily, he just stood there and looked at me as if to say "Now will you finally pick me up?"
I expect that from quail, but I figured turkeys, being a lot heavier, would take longer to fly well. I suppose it's a more dangerous world when you are confined to the ground.

I also caught 2 of them strutting with their feathers all fluffed out. Very entertaining.

I never owned a turkey that young, how interesting! I loved it when my Broad Breasted White youngsters start to strut with the tail feathers all spread out. Turkeys are so cool!

The slates we hatched last year were iur first turkeys too. Every day during cleaning and feeding we had jumpers.
I love seeing the little ones strut.

Quote: My pickled eggs are always purple. Use pickled beets to get purple instead of stewed beets to get red.

Quote: gonna boil off a few eggs today and try it see how it goes with food coloring

If you normally use beets or beet juice then I would just add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to the juice and test the resulting color on a white paper towel.  Add a bit more blue to make it darker if needed.

Try adding a little vinegar to your beets. I have a feeling it's the vinegar causing the color difference.

Wow! Did not know that one! They do mature so quick!

We are at 36* today! It's a heatwave for sure! It so mice to sit out with my chooks when it's nice out. Will have to do that when I get home from work....:D

Checked my cochin egg this morning. I believe it is fertile. Hercules, the morning molester, has succeeded. So now if she ever goes broody, who am I to stop her?
