Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I am struggling with the same issues, it's hard to know what is best. I keep thinking "a few more days inside won't be so bad and it will be much better outside for them".

Thing is, spring seemed just around the corner last week at this time . . .  and the week before.

I'm beginning to think the meteorologists are taunting us, they know the groundhog was right this year.

I agree, it's been very tough. It looks like so far it will be in the low 40s here next week so I am going to try to put my chick outside with her Mama permenantly.

Hello.  New guy from PA here.  Live with my wife and daughter in SC PA.

Welcome to the fun! :frow

She realized long ago she doesn't get a vote in my hobbies.

Not as bad as it sounds, I long ago gave up trying to interfere in her life too.

At least you have come to an agreement. How are those little eggs doing? :jumpy

I had a dream last night that there were more chickens in my coop, a pig in the yard, and a turkey I was telling everyone was a "partridge".

Sheesh, it gets pretty bad when you start rationalizing chicken math in your dreams....

Welcome to our busy little message thread. From the intro message you posted elsewhere, I recall you are "starting up" after some time without chickens, right?

Lot of people here can commiserate with you on predator issues too.

Correct. We are going to be starting a new, small, chicken operation. Would like to focus on one breed and breeding toward the standard of the breed. Hopefully have some nice birds by the time my daughter is old enough to leave the Cloverbuds and get into 4H. Hopefully provide meat and eggs for us and the family as well.

The predators were a pain at the old house. Should have invested in a great pyrenees.

It always helps to be able to point to people more crazy than you are (actually that is useful in many facets of life). There have been customers driving 1 - 2 hours each way to buy a few chicks, and last evening someone braved the ice storm to come buy 6 chicks from me. My wife knows I'd never do anything that insane, makes housing 16 half-grown chickens in the basement for another week seem sort of ok.

I made an expanded brooder in the garage for some of the chicks (better to still call them that, even though they are 8 weeks old now), but I don't want to take them out there until after the next snowstorm and subsequent super cold nights.

I have so much invested in them so far, risks are not gonna be taken at this point.
