2015 goals/plans: Maybe do a pen of meat birds. I have an aversion to the idea of the standard CX ones, it just seems so wrong. But what breed could I do in my small yard? Yard itself is fenced (which needs repaired and is on the to-do list) but I don't think they'd really free range well. Ideas?

Fix fence

Raised veg beds

fix ornamental pond rocks

redo path stones so I have a real sitting area next to the coop for chick tv.

plant 2 cherry trees

un-stump yard

plant lots and lots of veggies.

learn to can

get at least 3 cords of wood in, would prefer 4 or 5.

finish fixing up small bedroom/office. It's been torn up for 2 years now.
CX can and will forage and thrive in a free range situation...but you do lose a little control over what they are eating...I put in a batch of freedom rangers every year and they spend more time outside free ranging than they do inside but the cornish will also if started that way.

learning to can is a great idea and has saved me many times when the kids were little, money was tight some weeks and that meant no grocery store trips.

seriously?! LOL Belle is a silkie mix. She has the feathered feet, beard and crest, black skin, 6 toes. Docile just like a silkie. And is beautiful :) Mom is a red sexlink and dad is partridge silkie. She LOVES perching up high...today she discovered how to escape the pen I have them in and perch on top. Elsa my white silkie does the same thing!! not even 5 minutes after putting her back in she was back up. I give up LOL all the dogs are chicken friendly so no danger.
My question is she was born with gray comb. Given how pink her comb is compared to at birth think she is close to being ready to lay? 20 weeks old

this was after i put her back in! LOL I have a gate covering the gap. she will jump up at it until it falls off then hop out.

you can see how pink he comb is

Elsa....she spent all nigh ton top last week LOL we heard gate fall but didn't think anything of it until we woke the next morning to her chilling out on top.

time to start asking everyone....What is your spring and summer project this year ??
So many . . . don't even want to put them all in writing.

- finish multi-level brooder in garage
- add runs to the coop built last fall
- auto watering system with pipes and nipples
- build a "pretty" and practical chicken tractor, with the idea of renting out a coop and a few hens to local people that are not sure they ready for actual "ownership" of chickens
- build more large hoop tractors to grow out pullets for sale
that's just the poultry-related stuff, the garden is a whole other list.

This year I am thinking about adding these new breeds:
Black Sumatras
Wheaten Ameracaunas
Tolbunt Polish

my summer projects are..

rebuild fences around duck area.. we will use the same as we have on the layer side this time...
get my chicken breeds all under control instead of a little bit of everything..
get the rabbit meat part off the operation up and running better...this has some touchy area's because of laws.
manage to get a good garden and get the stuff caned instead of wasted like last year....I just didn't have the time..

My plans for the summer are:

get some trees down
Plant a small orchard
fix the roof at our old house and still have enough money for oil next fall
I definitely want a big garden :)
