Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I was gonna take all they had on Friday at $2 but the Amish guy out the road beat me to it...quick growing meals.

What is your back up plan if all of those would hatch

Back up plan? I don't need no stinking back up plan!

Don't have one. Cross that bridge when I get there. A lot of the chickens are orpingtons, they get big enough for meals. Figure a dozen are turkey, half the hatch will be roosters. Normally can get rid of some on cl and such. A lot of my layers are getting to 3 years, so hatched now will be replacements for next year

Good Evening all you Penn peeps. I have a question you may be able to help with...
When is the Connelsville swap? I live in WV and a friend n I are thinking about going to it.
you'll have to wait til next month, cause it was today, it's usually the third sunday every month except between dec and march, to cold so no one came much so they closed those months.

Thank you very much!

I have my first broody of the year! My cute lil' banty cochin hen. She raised guinea keets for me last summer.

It was literally perfect timing, I have eggs due to hatch next week. Can I put them under her even though they're on Day 14? If not I'll just give her the chicks when they hatch.

Some hens are great at getting chicks early, others not so much.... hens tend to have 'phases' to their brooding....

Pre broody- for 3 days or so before they decide to set they roam around clucking and generally being nasty to everyone who gets near them....

Setting broody- from getting eggs till hatch time, they are parked and intent, may get off of nest once a day for stretch, food/water and poo... usually pretty intense and lasts at least 10 days or more

hatching mode- hen begins talking to the eggs a day or so before hatch, she is transitioning into full hatch and mama mode and is expecting to feel babies moving under her soon. If she isn't ready for this stage she can continue to 'set heavy' and possibly smother chicks when she is not making accommodations for their movement at that time.

Some hens can switch to the hatching mode quite quickly, others just don't do well until they have been setting for 10+days, some hens it is 15 days, totally depends on the hen.

When you give a broody new chicks before she has been setting for 10-14 days you have to really watch her to make sure she is responding to the chicks and begins cooing to them and otherwise responding well to them, same if you give them eggs due to hatch soon, make sure she is talking to them and isn't still stuck in the 'just sit' mode or it can cause trouble. I had one hen who didn't transition when given eggs close to their due date, she had only been broody for about 10 days and when the chicks hatched she smothered 2 before I realized what the problem was and removed the rest. I gave her other eggs then and she sat another 2+ weeks and hatched out the new clutch with no problems at all. I didn't realize until after that she had not been 'talking' to her eggs and she just didn't seem ready for them to hatch..... lesson learned and now I watch for the signs so I can (hopefully) avoid problems....

Hubby did it again this year, and is no longer allowed to go to TSC alone during chick days
He was going for fencing so I told him to check for marked down Perkin ducks.
What I got
0 ducks
19 Asian
4 red ranger
20 leghorn, doubt they are all leghorn, some of them are pretty hefty with fat legs.

His excuse, they were only ..65 each.

At that price I would be tempted also!
sounds like some of your 'leghorns' might be white rocks or cornish x instead...
Tim and Heather tried to unload that bin on me yesterday. I resisted, told them later in the week. They were $1, but I was offered a "deal".

Nice of you to save me from myself.
her hubby was just being 'neighborly'!

As soon as I posted my pictures of my old dresser coop..................I realized I could actually be housing my new chicks in there...............until I can combine the older and the newer chickens.............

I had been thinking of putting the dog crate in the run or even it might fit in the bigger newer coop............but yesterday my 4 newer chicks all enjoyed a day in the dresser coop and some time in the grass as well!

sometimes just when you consider getting rid of something you find a new use!

I find children are often like this with toys..................they have not played with it in years and yet when its time to get rid of it there is a sudden renewed interest!

I am thinking If I am not using the small dresser coop............I should see if someone else might use it because really dont have a big yard and can accumulate all these bigger items............

I did work hard on that coop..............and it was an important project..............but I guess time will tell.

I also does provide a nice hospital option for me...............who knows........
i have to laugh.....more at myself than anything, wow..i need sleep..i was reading your post & got to the part where you were describing finding a new use for something you were about the throw away..well...then your next sentence, "I find children are often like this"...
