Me too, and we're neighbors!

@Fisherlady, love the Broody phase descriptions! You could write a 'What To Expect While You're Expecting' for chickens. Any idea what phase it is when they get put out of the nest box and stand there in a trance?....the Zombie Phase?

Me too.

Blarney, you need to update the CommunityWalk link in your tagline.

Hubby did it again this year, and is no longer allowed to go to TSC alone during chick days
He was going for fencing so I told him to check for marked down Perkin ducks.
What I got
0 ducks
19 Asian
4 red ranger
20 leghorn, doubt they are all leghorn, some of them are pretty hefty with fat legs.

His excuse, they were only ..65 each.

I would love if my hubby did this! Can't wait tile we have more land for chickens and more gardens and such. I waited at least six years to have chickens, I should be able to wait another year or so!

Woohoo!
This morning 3 more chicks hatched, putting my total for the year so far at 1002.

:weee

Just Wow!
:th

Back up plan? I don't need no stinking back up plan!

Don't have one. Cross that bridge when I get there. A lot of the chickens are orpingtons, they get big enough for meals. Figure a dozen are turkey, half the hatch will be roosters. Normally can get rid of some on cl and such. A lot of my layers are getting to 3 years, so hatched now will be replacements for next year

What do you do with your old layers?

Sure, we can meet at my house, I have baby chicks for everyone to hold while we are meeting.

I was gonna take all they had on Friday at $2 but the Amish guy out the road beat me to it...quick growing meals.

What is your back up plan if all of those would hatch

Were you actually looking for ducks or were you just going to buy them because you were going to get them cheap. I have turkey eggs in my incubator right now but once they hatch, I can hatch some Pekin ducks for you or I could bring you hatching eggs if you like.

I raise Muscovy because that is the preference of my duck customers..

Personally when it comes to a duck meal, we preferred the Perkin.so anytime I can get ducklings fairly cheap I snatch them up

But Anne
I spent 2 days last week getting all the extra roosters off the feed bill...I now have an extra 42 chicks and 2 geese to feed.
1 step forward and 3 steps back

They will become soup when they stop laying. Old and tough, but pressure canners work wonders.

At the moment, they still lay pretty well. No artificial light means they get a rest in the winter, so they live naturally. Just planning for the future and sustainability.

Haha. Sounds familiar. We sold our Golden Laced Wyandotte flock so we can focus on breeding silkies. Sold 6 bought 6 chicks. We have on order 6 broad breasted turkeys, 25 meat birds and 10 Muscovy ducklings. Hubby says we have too many birds when ever anyone asks. Our silkie is sitting on 6 eggs, we are about to fill up our incubator to see what hatches lol. We are waiting for our Muscovy ducks to start sitting on the eggs on the nests they have built. Hahaha chicken (and duck) math at its finest.
