near impossible to keep them alive..for sure! ...if they are left-be for now, they should be fine...it takes a lot for momma to give up on them..at least that is what I have had experience with.
X's 3..hahaha

I think my worries were the babies making their way back to the nest last night after being chased and carried all over the playground... The mom finding them and babies staying if the nest is moved out of the playground (it's a big playground and the nest was literally right in the middle). This is the playground the school uses for recess, so if the kits try to go back to their original nest location the chances of interactions with kids is going to be high. I thought kits nursed for 6-8 weeks?

Question, our power went out yesterday morning around 4:30. We got the generator up and running around 9 after another update from PPL that it would be several more hours until power was restored. Anyway, our incubator got down around 74 degrees before we got it plugged in and back up to temp. Are my eggs OK or did I lose the whole batch?

I just put 101 out of 111 into lockdown that got down to 70 for a few hours & 50 during the night for 8 hours. Once they got unplugged. The other time the bator got turned off. They are still doing great!

Does anyone know off hand the dosage of Tylan 50 for LF chickens? One of my boys seems to have an upper respiratory thing going on. I'm finding conflicting dosages. The one I was going to follow is 1/2 cc 2x daily sq injection for 5 days. Is that right?

when i have to use this i have just given 1/2cc once a day for 3-5 days. ...should see improvement by 3 dys..
Sometimes if their symptoms aren't "too-bad"..I will try Vet RX first..it is a natural remedy..i always try these kind of things first, then if symptoms persist, go to the "have-to" treatments..
With the Vet RX , you should see improvement within 2-3 days...sometimes even within that very same day..it has happened with mine...nice to have only had to use the natural stuff!!
oh, and that injectable stuff..once you have it measured out...you can give it orally..you do not have to/shouldn't inject it..unless of course you know what you're doing..then i will be quiet.:p

Regular old VapoRub (the human kind) also works for respiratory issues. Just smear a dab under each wing. When they tuck their head under while roosting it clears their sinuses & lungs. Eucalyptus oil would also work. Just a couple drops under each wing each evening before roosting.

sorry but just wanted to add ...
that keeping a close eye on your flock is THE most important thing you can do, by catching any signs..off-ness..symptoms in your birds early..you can, most of the time, keep any issues from becoming full-blown/overwhelming to your flock. ..being aware and treating at the onset is the key to health of any kept animal.

Thanks for the advice. We did inject it but just under the skin, not into the muscle. Quick, easy, painless :) I wanted to go at it full stream since only 2 (both boys) are showing any symptoms and I don't want it to spread at all. I did use some eucalyptus oil in the coop yesterday when I cleaned it out. Not alot but enough to smell it a little. I might just add a drop or two on the poop boards in the evening tonight.

They do nurse that long, but mom decreases it at time goes on. They do eat some solid food earlier than 6.

The survival rate on most wild animals is very low. Predators, weather both cause losses as week as the weaker ones being pushed aside. If the babies are big enough to be out running around, the mother may move them to a safer spot at night. Nature is amazing as well as cruel.

I know the does I have find a way to get away from the kids when they start wandering around the cage, frequently sitting on top of the nest box where they can't reach her. It is both for a rest and to let them explore.

I have handled babies as young as 1 week (domestic) put them back and mom continues to care for them.

..i like trying the non-invasive treatments first too.(vapo-rub/Vet RX..etc..)..non-invasive as in.., not-on the more natural side, but sometimes you just have to use what you need to to get them back to good.

i have one girl in particular, when the weather changes..usually from warm to cold very quickly..she gets a bit stressed and gets kinda a sneeze thing going..it is usually cleared up in 2 days just with the Vet RX and some extra vit/min electrolyte in their water...
If it doesn't go "away" in 2 dys..then she gets 3 days of the once a day dose of Tylan...she has always cleared up fully after that...seems every October ,fall into winter this happens...the weather can be very strange at that time anyway.

you do not need to inject..can make them a little sore if having to do this ti them multiple times...i have put it into pieces of bread and had them eat it or..to make sure they get all of the dose..I usually just give it to them from the plunger of the syringe..by taking off the needle once i have the vial full...one quick squirt down the throat and they are done. I try not to use the needle when I can, ...but hey..if you are comfortable ..then by all means..

they've had it for more than 2 days but I didn't realize what it was. I actualy swabbed their throats with a q-tip to make sure it wasn't Gape worms first. Now THAT, I was uncomfortable with and I felt bad for them lol. Neither of them are acting off at all but they sound bad. Raspy breathing. Joel's crow has even changed like he has a frog in his throat. It's lower pitched. Figures. He was just about to go to his new home too lol. I told the guy that I wanted to treat him first. I don't want to sell a sick bird.
I'm going to do the injections in different areas and alternate where so they don't get too sore in one spot. I was going to give it orally but from what I've read, it seems to work better injected. I should've done one injected and one orally to compare. I also want to make sure that I know how to do an injection ahead of time so if the time comes where I absolutely have to, I've got it down :)
I'm hoping for good results. They seem competely unfazed by it right now lol

Stopped by TSC on my way home from work today and only bought wire ties.
