Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I originally asked one of the admins her for help and he pointed me here. I do hope I've done this correctly .... An update is below the original post......

Good Morning..... Or at least it was morning when I started writing this as I'm confused on so many levels right now I don't even know where to begin...:). Still I'll try to make this as short as possible. I'm very lost here and can't find where to post for help with this. I've read all the newbie stuff but I still feel very blind here.

Anyway, I came into possession of four little peeps { long story, if you'd like to hear it just let me know but for now I'll just get try to stay on track here...} I figured I could at least give them a good, loving life until I had to take them to a farm when they got older. I had no choice. But Spending time with them I see what wonderful animals they are and I want to find them a home to live out their lives... to not be eaten.. Is this possible or am I just thinking silly ? I know they're not fancy, or very pretty, { except to me } but they're very sweet and really smart. There's three hens, one rooster and they were three weeks old on May 19th. I'm still feeding them baby food and spring water and kinda rationing their food so it won't stress their legs too much as they grow. { Watching videos but just keeping up with the feeding watering exercise and chicken poo is exhausting. }

I'm a bit handicapped from two car accidents 52 years old and live in a one bedroom 2nd floor apartment and it's been a bit rough. My 10 year old chihuahua has been a big help but apparently these peeps are what they call "meat" chickens and grow incredibly fast. It seems they're bigger every morning. We go to the park and to the woods, but they're getting faster, even faster then my chihuahua and time may be running out...And I do hope this doesn't sound as absolutely crazy as I feel writing it... Any advice at all would be appreciated... Thank you sooo much, Gabi Mount Joy Pa .

Update... As of today they are 4 weeks old today. Am I aware I'm repeating myself ? Yes, I am. It's gotten that crazy. I've raised five children and yet I haven't seen this much poo in all my life.... I've put some oats in with the chicken baby feed. They also seem to like Cheerios w/ protein. They're almost all feathers now . I'm working on recent pics but lol....We'll see. They're so fast and definitely not peeps anymore so that's been a bit difficult. My chihuahua is no longer the helping mama but has been added to the "pecking order" as shes apparently developed a taste for the chicken feed which causing constant yet amusing squabbles between them as she tries to nose her way into their food dish. This must sound crazy to all the seasoned chicken owners out there and I can assure you, it has been... but there's also been a lot of love and I'm hoping to be able to find them a loving home before I have to take them to a place where they'll be killed. It may be a silly thought, but I had to try. Thank you all for reading my post and good luck n love to you and your chickens...

p.s. if I get pics ill post them to my profile
I am just outside of Mount Joy, but for obvious reasons, no one is going to point you in my direction.. ( I am a poultry processor ).

as others have said, if these are meat birds they are not meant to live long lives, keep a close eye on the legs..
a few of us are really close to you .

welcome to the chicken world, you can never go back (even if you are in an apartment )

What did MC get..
Fisher has beautiful birds, calm and so laid back.
Kind of funny to watch those 2 big boys that I got from her..one of them likes to lay in the grass out front and just watch the traffic go past...I have had people stop and take pictures

The ones she got are mixes, all from brown eggs but grandparents may have been green eggers.... mix of White rock, barred rock, light sussex, jersey giant and a few barnyard mix hens, and our Black Australorp and black sex link barred rooster.

We don't keep any bird that is aggressive and we won't even sell them if we know they have bad attitudes at all... those birds are removed from the genetics because I don't want future generations... over a few years it has really improved the overall attitude of the flock and generally we get a lot of decent birds. No matter what you still get a few who are more 'flighty' and the infrequent aggressive rooster, but that is just the nature of genetics and it will occur sometimes.

I really, really love those WR roosters, they are nice to be around, gorgeous to look at and I know our two are being outstanding with the broodies and tiny chicks... it is really something to watch an 11 lb rooster with his head at ground level calling over babies to take food from his beak when his head is bigger than their entire body! LOL. We couldn't find one of the 2 week old chicks one evening at bedtime, the broody had taken her crew onto the shelf for the first time the night before and we were worried it didn't follow her into the coop. I was checking all of the shelves before going outside to hunt for it and I touched Andre's chest and he stood for me... and there was the chick, safely tucked under him! Guess the chick made it to the top shelf while mama had stayed on the second one so he just tucked under 'Uncle Andre' instead!

GM all:

Today's surprize....a day early....looks like a CCL (it looks like I am three for three on the CCL girls...)and an OE.......

They are cute!! Glad you are getting a good hatch after everything you have had go wrong earlier this season!

What kind of a setup do they need (should they have a "coop"/house to lay eggs in or is a cage made out of 1/2" hardware cloth on all side suitable)? Also, does one need an incubator to be able to hatch any quail eggs or are quail smart enough to sit on eggs like a chicken?

Cages work best. I have twelve in a 2x3 ft cage.

To my knowledge, cots don't brood well, I incubate, but they only take 15-17 days. They are sloppy eaters and poop a lot and it is high in ammonia.

They grow very fast. Laying at around 8 weeks.

Are you looking for eggs/meat, or pets? There are some really pretty breeds kept for decorative purposes.

Would be for eggs/meat. Was hoping they could replenish there own numbers without my help, that way I wouldn't have to go buy more every time.

Three ones I'm hatching are from my own eggs. My layer cage is 9 female, 3 make, so eggs are fertile. They just aren't good at going broody, so I collect the eggs and incubate.

They are this big when they hatch. That is a plastic shot glass.

My cage. It's 10 inches high, suspended over a rabbit dropping test. It is ½x1 bottom, 1x2 sides and top with roll out egg tray.

I no longer have the waterer in it. There are three nipples now sticking through the top.

It seems there are a number of people on here with orpingtons.

I'm going to need a few to add to my flock for diversity. Color isn't really important, size and survivability are. If they are chocolate or black, it would be a plus,

I think at some point I'm going to need these things to breed into my albinos for sustainability. Then I'll have to breed the color back out.

Of course I incubate, so eggs would work.

Thanks for the laugh, I needed that..

could also use the medical side of fisherlady today,,got a gooney the size of a baseball above my knee... (only CC would understand, I walked right into the side attachment for the tractor weight )
cold will reduce swelling if used early.... if you have reduced sensation or mobility below it you should see dr for it. Biggest risks are compartment syndrome because excessive swelling causes drastic reduction in circulation in the area and blood clots from the congealed blood. The clots can go to lungs, heart or brain. Dr can recommend best medication for clots (if any is needed).

The thing with the clots is that they can occur days or weeks after initial injury. pay special attention to any shortness of breath, heart palpitations or chest pressure or sudden dizziness or changes in your mental status. Blood clots, or emboli, often mimic symptoms associated with heart attacks and strokes, basically because the clot creates a heart attack or stroke when it gets stuck in the circulatory system in the heart or brain. In the lung it creates a blockage in the blood supply a system so even though the lungs are able to absorb oxygen normally they have a reduced ability to transfer it into the circulatory system.

Folks often don't understand the risks of emboli and I have (unfortunately) seen some tragic results from them. I don't live life in a bubble for fear of getting bumps and bruises, but I do know to not ignore odd symptoms after the fact.
