This is a picture from google images.............of a wyandotte chickens single comb.

My golden lace wyandotte has a nasty injury on her comb.

I am not sure how it got injured........did she get caught up on some wire or netting? or did one of the other gals peck it

bottom line is you see how the comb goes back toward a point...........well her comb now stands nearly straight up in the air since it has a cut on it

its hardly attached. It had been bleeding but the bleeding has stopped .

I just tried to wash it by dabbing with clean soap and water,
dried it by dabbing
then put on antibiotic ointment without the pain killer
and dabbed some blue kote on

it still sticks up alot so i tried to tape it down a bit but i doubt the paper thin first aide tape will
stay on from the comb to feathers.........it does not have much to adhere to.

my question is.........should I try to wrap it with gauze or something tomorrow

I have her in a rabbit hutch for the night so that she can heal .......and that none of the gals peck at her in the morning

any advice on this

has anyone ever had to amputate a section of the comb? I am hoping by lining it up it might heal or in the worst case scenario.......as in frost bite the part would fall off if it does not heal.

again.........please help with advice.

other than the comb injury she seems fine.

thanks so much

from one mother hen to the rest of you all!

I have no personal experience with this but I just mentioned this to someone else dealing with a severe comb injury -- consider that birds like Old English Game Bantams sometimes have combs and wattles intentionally cut off for show, so... I guess use your best judgement and then if it comes down to it... use sharp scissors? :/ Not much of a help except to say that the worst case scenario may not be as bad as you think. I would possibly try taping, and see what happens. Anyway, good luck with her!

If you do decide to give it a snip, I wonder if you could use a bit of styptic powder (like you would use on a dogs nail cut too short) to speed up the clotting process. Flour will do in a pinch, if you don't have styptic powder.

I am a ways away but if you are really worried about it I have piles of wood that I want gone(don't have a wood burning stove). It's your if you want to come get it. There are probably to cords split, another cord ready to split and probably another 4 or 5 cords still in large logs that would need cut down then split.

Where are you? We heat with a pot bellied stove and never turn down a good chance for firewood if a reasonable drive.... though honestly, you could probably sell it for a decent amount if you advertised locally.

We had a hen with a nasty comb lac this spring....you have done all the right steps and if you keep her in a hospital cage for a couple of days she will probably do fine without too much more needed... if it does seem too floppy after the initial wound heals you could shorten the loose portion with very, very sharp scissors or a scalpel but you will need to be able to control the bleeding as already mentioned. I wouldn't shorten it unless it really seemed to be affecting her daily activities.

needed to share, just visited Hershey Gardens and saw that our very own Eweaber has metal sculptures featured there!! Soooo happy for him, and very impressed. (I sculpted the ornament in the last picture myself -well...I had a little help).

Wonky looks like that only the yellow is in his hackles too, his legs are longer & his comb is bigger & he trills when he crows.

Yes! Wonky's comb is huge! It was really interesting to have two of the same types of rooster together to see how different they can be. I don't recall if purplefoxglove's lavender orp crowed at all, but that trill from Cc's lavender orp was fantastic!

17403, I have tried and get people that say they are going to come get it and don't show up. I think a lot of people are put of by the larger logs.
