Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hon, you can vent here anytime you want!! you can be proud of what you are accomplishing with all of your hard work. Very few would sign up for what you are doing....we will look forward to any chance you get to share with us. I hope the intensity reduces a bit as you get into a routine, but even if it doesn't you know where to come for a couple minutes of relaxation to get recharged.

Ditto!!!, Chippy....learning to work hard makes everything else seem easier....(and you sleep a lot better too!)

Impressive! Keep up the good work!

First week back to school was stressful... I ramped up the number of honors classes I'm taking this year and my hand has blisters and raw spots from writing so much. I've had piles of homework already and any spare time has been used to chill out with/care for the birds or nap. I got no sleep this week and am not going to be able to sleep in this weekend at all, ugh. Sorry for all the complaining

. Just needed to vent a little.

Thank you! Like I said, the kids helped so it wasn't all me lol.

Good luck in school this year! I know it's rough work but you'll be so happy you did it all later on :) feel free to vent any time! You know we're all here to support you :)

Auro:

I had a buddy that shucked the corn, then blanched it and froze it on the cob....never in the amounts you are doing though....

I did our first couple batches like that but they were only a couple dozen. If our freezer wasn't almost at the point of not being able to close, I'd probably be doing more like that lol. So fat I have 7 quarts done and 7 more almost done. Another 7 are about top go on the canner next and it doesn't even look like I've put a dent in it!

Good luck with your new school year.

My son starts on Monday and he will start on crutches. He is on the football team and hurt his ankle and can't walk. He will miss the first game of the school year on Friday.

Hey guys, emergency question. I just came home after being out all day to find one of my girls dead. :hit It doesn't looks like foul play, none of the chicks are missing. I did not see any injuries or anything on her. It's my SLW, about a year old. My egg production has been down, but I also have broodies. Should I have her tested? Where do I have her tested? Her neck was completely limp, but I guess thats normal if she died? I felt to see if she was egg bound, but her vent did not feel firm. Her crop was semi full, but soft. She hadn't been acting strange at all either. Is it possible she could have choked? She is still a little warm, so I know it was not long ago. I'm okay that she died, but I don't want her to suffer, and I don't want to spread any diseases to the rest of my flock.

Also, she did lay an egg today. I found her steps from the porch, and her and another chicken have been jumping up in my picnic table on the porch. I wonder if she jumper of an snapped her neck or broke her back? Checked her throat, don't see any blockages. Sorry for rambling, I'm trying to make sense of this.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( I can't help with any advice. I found one of my girls a month or so ago dead also but she was on the roost. Her neck was also very floppy, hadn't showed anything wrong the day before or anything. I haven't had any issues with the flock since either. Hopefully, it was just a freak accident, for both our girls.

Thanks! That does make me feel better. I was looking at the forums, and there is a whole thread on sudden chicken death syndrome. Apparently it is not that uncommon for them to just drop dead like that. Again, my main concern is for the rest of my flock, so I'm glad to hear you had a similar experience that turned out okay (at least for the rest of your flock). :/

I am so with you. Last year of nursing school started this week. Talk about hitting the ground running, I've got back to back med calc exams and clinical starts Monday. I live with my dad (we lost my mom two years ago, and being here while I go to school is the best way I can help out) and he went out of town on a business trip this week as well. First week back and caring for the zoo solo was just about all I could take. Especially since my 22 year old cat had to be put under last weekend to remove a rotten tooth and it turns out her jaw is riddled with cancer. Pain meds every twelve hours and canned food for breakfast and dinner since then. Going into a semester with energy levels depleted totally warrants some venting. But, one of my girls did lay her first egg yesterday.

I have been "under the weather for the last 4 days". IDK what I got, but I have a new appreciation for good health (and hope to have it again soon). I've had to push myself with what little energy I have to take care of all the chickens, and after even a few minutes of activity I am exhausted. I'm so far behind on my plans and this just made it much worse.

I hope to be back participating here soon.
