welcome! we are in berks county near Cabelas!

I am OCD and feel prevention is key for healthy chickens! so far so good!

Penelope still hasn't laid her egg. She doesn't like to come out of the cat/dog  carrier. She is eating and drinking and popping and still swollen. It is going to be 2 weeks on Saturday.

My hubby wants to build a chicken barn and tear down all we have build over the years raising chickens. That means he wants to sell off all we have and just keep my silkies. He knows how much I love my silkies :love He wants to restart after we get every thing built. He has in his mind a huge coop for everyone sectioned off into groups/breeds.  He wants to order new chicks from the feed mill we go to. Had me looking if I had the paper from last year.. I did. I seen they had Cuckoo Marans. My Marans are my best layers right now, either 1 or 2 eggs from them a day, I have 2 of them that are 3 years old. I seen they had some Araucanas too. I think I would be able to make my own olive eggers if I get some straight run chicks. So much to do and so little time sigh. I love the darker eggs and the blue eggs.

Last year the feed mill offered in layers: Rhode Island Reds, Barred rocks, Black sex links, White Leghorn, Gold sex links. Fancy breeds: assorted bantams, Araucanas, Danish Brown Leghorns, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds, White Rock, Mottled Anconas Black or Buff Minorcas, Delawares, Naked Neck Turkens, (hubby hates the look of these lol) Black Jersey Giants, Dominiques, White Laced Red Cornish, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Light Brahmas, Cochins, and Cuckoo Marans.  So many choices.

If we ever get the new coop build, I will post pictures lol. He has been talking about doing a big new coop for a while now. He did score some free metal for the roof. We were talking about using pallets to build the walls. We will have to level out the back yard, which isn't easy with all the rocks and trees. Lots of work needs to be done.

Still hoping for Penelope, poor thing. Do you still think she's egg bound? Two weeks seems like a long time....

Welcome! As others have said, build a bigger coop than you think you need!

I put Penelope back out in her coop last night. I thought that maybe being in a familiar environment (away from barking dogs) she would feel safer. She still is walking like a penguin and I still feel like an egg shaped lump by her vent. This morning she was walking around outside and eating. Poor thing. I tried what everyone said online for her, except break the egg since I can't see it in her vent and don't want her to be cut up internally. My family was tired of sharing a bathroom with a chicken and my son said just eat her already.

Teenagers!!!!

Howdy from the other end of the state....Where are you at in the process? Many folks can help you fill your coop and keep them comfortable....What do you currently have?

We have mix of only 14 now currently still inside until they are ready.... Getting a feel for which breed "fits us" better
Barn is 14x40 for inside with run and yard to free roam from time to time
Sand floor ( natural crushed sandstone)
What do you all like for inside nesting boxes hay, straw, ??

So........does anybody know how to or have any tips for converting a working washing machine into a chicken plucker?
nope but on the Halloween thread they are going to hookmeup with the schems in a pdf soon for a easy one soon. we are going to use a DE pool filter motor. farm 3/4 motors are fairly cheap online and with the way they did it, it makes it feasible.

I use the pine wood shavings from Tractor Supply for my nesting boxes
