Good Morning everyone. I hope everyone is having a great morning. I am here watching my chicks play and scratch in the brooder,they seem to grow every time I look away lol. My question this morning is when can I introduce grit and treats to the little gals? I know alot of folks say 2 weeks but I was thinking if they were being raised by old momma hen they would be eating what she eats (ie ...grit bugs grass worms). My little gals are 5 days old I am,thinking on introducing them to grit and some freeze dried meal worms as an occasional treat along with some hardboiled eggs and some finally diced veggies.
Thanks for the help all.
@TillyPeeps
I counted the white headspots. I the basket pic, I see 4 white spots, that's why I concluded it was 4 males. One's head is a little obscured, so it could be 5,but definitely 4. That's not too bad. My Legbar hatches tend to be slightly female heavy, but close to 50/50. 4 pairs of Reese Legbars is a great start, I'm pleased they traveled and hatched so well.
Kudos to you for handling them so well in transit.

should I put the grit in a separate little feed lid.I started give them mealworm and grit when they were less than one week old. As you said, they would have these with mom hen really early, so it shouldn't hurt them.
I had 2 more Reese girls hatch this morning11 out of 12 were good and made it! @TillyPeeps did a wonderful job handling the eggs
There are still more hatching but this is what the brooder looks like so far lol

thank you....I love this PA forum everyone here has been a big help. Now I just discovered my unknown chick is not acting rigjt and I don't know why. She is eating and drinking plays for awhile then lays down and looks like she is breathing hard. Checked for pasty butt she had a little but not blocking her vent, cleaned her all up and she seems to be pooing fine. I guess just keep an eye on her.Yes. They will go eat it when they feel they need it. They may eat a lot first, and will just occasionally peck it later .
