Blue (as in BBS - Blue/Black/Splash) is partially dominant, so a blue roo will produce about 50% blue chicks if mated to a black hen. Lavender is recessive, so with a black hen (that is not split to lavender) all the babies will be black split to lav. That works fine for sexing BSL chicks because they look black (the recessive lavender is completely hidden). If a chick that is not black (blue/splash/lavender) hatches, they are not sexable, even if the femle parent is barred, you just won't see the effects of the barring gene unless against a black background.

So, if I make the cross I described, the BSL pullet chicks will grow up completely black, but carrying the (hidden) lavender gene. so I won't have sexable lavender chicks, just black. As with any hybrid, breeding from those hens will give tough to predict results.

I found a place online that will DNA sex chicks from their eggshell, but it costs $10 per chick, so I don't see that as feasible unless it is a high value chick..
Thanks for the answer. Black sexlink is also good for me. Are you planing to have any ameraucana x rhodebar chick next year? I would like to have one of those too.

Tillypeeps.....I talked to a guy that said to just put the 1/2" welded wire right on top of the grass 18 inches out from the coop, instead of burying it a foot, which worked for me because I planed on mulching all the way around the coop and run. I laid an extra foot of mesh on the ground and used tent stakes to hold the edges down. If I were at home I would take a pic and show u. I don't know if that method will work or not ,I hope so.
We considered to use this apron method. But we need to dig the ground to run electric to the coop anyway, so we decided to bury the hardware cloth. After buried the wires, I also planted some flowers around the coop, so hopefully the neighbors wouldn't complain about it.

I have not decided how to run my electric to the coop yet right now it is just and extension cord. I hope the apron method works.

Hopefully by the next chicken train run, my Marans will be laying and I can send some eggs down your way. I could send you some of my ameraucana eggs too if you wanted more genetic diversity. Some are split to lavender so I'm getting lavender chicks out of them.
I was thinking I might have silkied lavender eggs or chicks to send you by then. Or at least a spare lav silkied roo.
I be happy to get a few BCM eggs to expand my gene pool. I might have a line on a Little Peddler cockerel for you also. Are any of your BCM's blue, or all black? I'm getting more blue and splash than blacks now.

I don't have any plans along that line, but you might be able to get that hybrid from @Auroradream26

Every year I have to make hard decisions about what breeds to stop producing (last year it was New Hampshires). Rhodebars are on the short list to be dropped after this year. I've been selling all the hatching eggs for the last month or so and probably will not hatch any more this season. I am definitely expanding my flock of Legbars and Welbars, and adding some much better quality (and new color) Ameraucanas. Those should all be popular with customers. For my personal "guilty pleasure" I hope to add Fly-tie (genetic hackles) and Black Sumatras. Both have gorgeous males and I want some roaming around the farm, as well as a breeding pen of each.

Little Peddler would be cool but right now, I have a few promising looking boys growing out. I think I have about 8 to choose from. Mine are strictly black copper.

Are you still planning on keeping the Bielefelders going? Or has that been scrapped?

As our girls were beginning to fly up, walk around the outside of the brooder and poop freely, we made it a no-fly zone over the weekend.

In order to make up for their loss of exercise, we took them outside for their first field trip.

I have video too, but don't know if that can be posted. :/

Hopefully, she will have her breeding pens separated next year.

There's a farm near me having some long tail roos (maybe Sumatras) that are very gorgeous. I agree that they are great looking when running on grasses.

Lol, I'm hoping to have them set up THIS year! I just managed to create a makeshift separation pen for the CCL. No clue why I didn't think of it sooner since it was so easy but I guess it wouldn't really have worked out until now since it's warmer out. A lot of people want the cream legbars so I'll be hatching out their eggs and riding on them and the turkeys for the rest of the funding for the bigger pens. I already have a few hundred saved up towards them but I'm going to wait until I save a couple more, borrow a truck and pick everything I need up at once :)
