Once you have the chicken disease, there's no cure!!! :lau

:lau  I should change my user name to chick a holic.   Chicken lover do you own 200 chickens???
no. A few years back I would've wished for more chickens, but I can't keep track of names for more than 20, so the layers I have now are just that ~ layers. The 200 is short for my birth year, 2000, because with the extra "0" it was too long.

So my two week old BRs have learned to escape their brooder. I walked into my laundry room this morning to Popcicle looking at me from the middle of the room! They now have an old window screan over it.

My handy hubby has begun construction on what we call the "Chicken Palace". Since we are not free ranging, we needed a larger space for our flock. Hopefully it gets finished sooner rather than later, but he keeps coming up with all kinds of ideas!! I may need to rein him in a bit to get a usable structure complete now, and plan for grand additions later!!

That looks great! So nice to have someone handy around the house!

Looks like a good start...remember to allow a corner which can be converted to allow a broody some privacy if needed...or space the egg boxes to allow for a divider to be placed if needed for that, you never know when a broody will throw a wrench into the nest box situation!

Lol, your mind goes right to to the broodies. Mine will too for my next coop! My broody is on 14 or so of her fertile eggs. Today I found one rotten one that had burst! Ew! :sick. I tried to gently wipe the others off as best u could and I put them back under Momma. I candled the rest tonight, and they all are developing well.

I will get pictures of the SPR chicks eventually! Life keeps happening.

You'll get to it when you can. My broody's eggs are developing well. My husband wanted to regime the chickens early, but I told him I won't be the cause of a chicken miscarriage by moving and disrupting my broody. So we are waiting another 10 days until she hatches the eggs out to move the whole troop.

.

They do learn to explore quickly! Make sure to p some kind of weight on the screen, or else it won't hold them for long! :D

Hello I'm fairly new to Backyard chickens and this would be my first post in the Pennsylvania area beings that I am from Clearfield PA. I have spoken with motorcycle chick and mentioned to her that I was getting a small Coop from Tractor Supply. I ordered 3 Rhode Island Reds from Agway and they are supposed to be female pullets. I have noticed that two of them are developing wing and tail feathers simultaneously. Whereas the runt is barely growing wing feathers and no tail feathers at all. Could anybody possibly explain this to me. They all seem healthy beings they are 9 days old and eating very well. Thank you Butch I tried uploading photos but my smartphone is not so smart and backyard chicken apps keeps crashing
Hi,

You need more vitamins, minerals and enzymes for that chick. It sounds like it is not properly uptaking the nutrition you are giving it. Bovidr Labs Poultry Nutri-Drench will do that. It is very high quality and does not need to be digested. It mainlines directly into the bloodstream and is measureable here in 30 minutes. You can read about it here. http://www.nutridrench.com . I have been using it on my poultry and collies for over a decade. I have never had pasty butt, a sick or dead chick when raising them with the Nutri-Drench in their water. Add to their daily water for the 1st 2-3 weeks of life. or for that period after you see a problem. The solution should look like very weak tea. Wildlife rehabbers and 850K birds aren't wrong. I get mine at Tractor Supply. The smallest bottle is just fine for your needs. It is very concentrated and a little goes a long way. Your tack store probably also carries it.
Best.

Well the question is definately answered now, my Speckled sussex just went from Daisy to Duke the dogs went out this morning and were barking around the coop and my 10week old speckled started crowing. It was funny because when he let out the crow my dog ran away, the more duke crowed the more the dog barked ......etc etc etc...

Hope they do good, if it is the SPR you got I would expect pips tomorrow afternoon, if you had the bator ready to go as soon as you got them.... how many made lockdown?

Well, I'm not real experienced in knowing whats viable, I have a really good flashlight and candling is pretty easy...of the 40 eggs total, 4-5 were clear, there was something going on in all the others....I haven't candled in about a week.....looking at the calendar, you are correct tomorrow...duh, the red dorks a day later.....
