Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I think they are good looking birds. Aren't they are good for pest control and watching for predators?

I have 6 chikens now. If we move, then I may give them to my brother-in-law and restart a flock after we settle down. :(

We are fairly lucky not to have many pests here, I don't think the pukeko would help with that but our cat would haha, she doesn't annoy the chickens or the ducks which is lucky.
Boohoo about moving! That always sux and having to give chickens away would be the worst! Hopefully I don't have to.

I have one of your BCM roosters, Dennis, if you want him back.
Thanks for the offer, but I have a bunch of beautiful ones running loose on the farm They, and Welsummers, are magnificent when free ranging. I'm planning to sell or free range all my Marans because they are such poor layers. I get (literally) 5 or 6 times the number eggs from the California Greys and Blue Egg Sexlinks as from the Marans. I keep peas and turkeys even though they don't "pay their way", but I'm just not that into Marans to make them worth keeping as pets.

I expect they will do very well free ranging. They seem to be smart and alert, 2 qualities that are mandatory for a permanently free-ranged bird. I bet they will join the parade of broody hens that randomly show up with chicks

GM all:

A question, I am on day5 (of 7) for medicating my flock with tetracycline (seems to be working great), so how many days do I need to toss eggs???

Help!

I was just out with the girls and I saw this poop - I'm not sure how fresh it is. But those small yellow things? They're either worms or some type of maggot??

They were wiggling around throughout. No bigger than a grain of rice.

They get Rooster Booster in their water daily. Dumor Poultry Grower/Finisher Feed + grit. Food scraps sometimes (mostly melon or cucumber). Should I get meds to administer ASAP??

you might try Ivermectin, sold at TSC, 5mg, you need to verify the dose buy my memory says one drop per pound placed on the shoulder blades...it handles many more types of worms than wazine.....my two cents....

Safe-guard for goats or cattle. Look up Casportpony for her thread on dosage.

Thanks you two! I'll have to check and buy what is available.

Part of the mystery is solved. Brownie is the one laid a blue egg everyday, including the large size one yesterday. She is an amazing layer and never missed one day during last 10 days. Someone laid a shellless egg in the run this morning. If it's Ruff-Ruff's, I'll not be able to find her egg color today.

Here's my trio! NHR's (Pepper & Ginger) are 13 weeks old, and White Silkie (Tiny!) is 17 weeks old. I love them so!

They look great! But the mandatory question is, only three? ;)

Well, I'm down to 7 eggs under the broody girls. One of their eggs got crushed. It's a good thing I checked though. Ana was starting to get stinky because of it but wasn't at that nasty point yet.
Oh that smell! How terrible it is!

Quote: I just looked up a pukeko, what a gorgeous bird! Especially cool that he mingles with your ducks!

Quote: Me too!

Settlement is in 40 days... I figure I'll need a week to settle in before I get my girls back. Then Dheltzel, I'll be arranging a pickup!

Yaah for Brownie! She has good heredity behind her. Can you tell a difference in color comparing her egg to the Legbar? My theory is that she has only a single blue egg gene and will lay a lighter eggs from the start, but the sexlinks from last year are laying very light blue eggs now and my other theory is that they have laid so many eggs that they simply are running low on the blue pigment (hardly something to fault them for). It could be both are contributing factors, but I don't recall if the sexlinks laid really blue eggs at first.
