He sorta looks like a copper Maran with something else

Yeah not sure. Supposed to be a Welsummer mix. His sisters are silver colored with beautiful penciling. Someone mentioned Wyandotte but he may be something different from the girls. The "father" was pretty in the picture. I think the girls are trying to lay. I was hoping for olive eggs but it's not looking like that will be the case.

So we got our first egg today. It's a small one. I'm almost sure it's from our Delaware Shelby. The girls are so excited. My 4 yr old asked which one of the chickens grew up. It was too cute. They are said to lay large eggs, but this one is small. Is that normal for a first lay for their eggs to be smaller? I also wanted to ask about what to put in the nesting boxes. We tried straw and all they did was pull it out and all over the coop. When we cleaned up the straw it stunk so bad so we are looking into other stuff. Our coop has sand for the flooring. Is it OK to use sand for the nesting boxes? Also does any one use diatomaceous earth in their coop? I've read alot of good things about it.

Congrats!
Yes, the first eggs will be small. For a while. The pullets might lay daily, then suddenly stop for a week or so. It's how the kinks go.
You can use anything in the box. It's for their comfort and to protect the eggs.
Some people use carpet pieces. Great when the girls keep scratching out the bedding.

X2, artificial turf or the green outdoor carpet can work....we put an extra piece of trim board across the front of the box to stop them dragging out the bedding. We use hay since we have it in easy supply and the stalks are solid, not hollow like straw so decreased risk of mites hiding in it, some folks use pine flakes, they smell good and are pretty cheap at Tractor Supply and similar feed stores.

I received some sad news this morning. The woman keeping my chickens had a massive predator attack. She said she only has a couple roos left. All of my girls are gone too.

She said there were little bodies strewn everywhere, they weren't all eaten.

So it looks like I will be starting fresh with new chickys. I'll miss my girls, but I gave them the best life possible, and I will do the same with this flock also.

That also means I am accepting "donations" from all of you neighborly people!

I would love a couple from @fisherlady s SPR line if any one has any in SE pa (love those broodies!). Also I hope to get some silkies and banty cochins if anyone can point me in the right direction.

That's too bad. I couldn't imagine. I'm so worried that I will come out to that. Something has been trying to get in our coop. We have lattice up inside the wire fence and they are chewing at the bottom. Even if they make it in the run they will have to be able to try to get in the coop.

@dheltzel since you have EE or Ameraucanas, would you be able to tell me if this is a male or female? Only questioning now because I seen something on another thread. Please if anyone else has insight as to your guess. Both pictures will be of 20 week old EE.

She/he is the only one I have that looks like this.

All the others look like this. Give or take some darker colored heads. This one is 20 weeks and all the ones that look like her are 10 weeks.
(Sorry about the pics. I don't know why they always turn out so small)

The top picture appears to be a hen, if you look on her back, from mid back towards the tail, the feathers look rounded in the picture...a rooster would have thinner, elongated and pointy feathers starting there.
Her neck is deceiving, you see the pointy looking dark areas, but it is surrounded by a rounded end of a lighter color. Many feather patterns do this, I think it is a natural defense mechanism meant to make them look 'roostery' so predators are less likely to choose them to attack, since roosters are normally a bit better able to defend themselves.
