I went to the swap this morning and sold everything that I took. Great success! BUT...I broke hubby's rule...I brought home a duckling lol. A lady there had cute little new muscovy babies and I couldn't resist. I used the excuse that Mira needed someone to keep her company :) For someone who didn't want any ducks, hubby had to hold her, twice lol. Pictures later but she was the only chocolate colored one in the bunch.

At our last home, we could free range. I miss this. The chickens would peck at the glass door! It was always a riot. When it rained, they didn't want to go into the coop, or beneath the trees-- seemed to think the house was a better plan.

Yep, one hens knocks, and can be quite determined about it, lol...we just need to remember to slide the screen shut (sliding glass door) or half the flock raids the mud room for the bird seed bags they know are in there. Chickens are much smarter than many give them credit for!
 
Anyone want our coop at central PA? It's your for FREE if you can pick it up. We are moving to NY and cannot take our chickens, so they went to hubby's cousin. They didn't take our coop because it's too big. It's a 4'x12' coop with 2x6 bottom frames and 2x4 wall frames. Walls and nesting boxes are insulated. Very sturdy. Hardware covers all the openings and 5 windows. Electric wires installed. We made it ourselves and spent more than $400 on the materials. It's a really nice coop. Even if you cannot take it whole, maybe can consider tear it a part and reassemble it. I like people here, so I would like to offer it to someone caring for their chickens first before we put it on craigslist. Note all the chain link fences have gone and the tree house beside it not included.

I want to get rid off it quickly before we put our house on market. Another reason it has to go ASAP is it reminds my 3 year old son to look for his chickens every day. He refuse to believe his chickens gone. He cried, called their names, and went to search for them everywhere. Then he came up a story that the chickens didn't come to him just because they are sleeping in the coop. It's just heart broken to see him so upset everyday.

 
Good evening all:

Had a visit from Anne....gave her a handful of young'ins ....her car was full of feathers of all sorts from DH......I think she has a pretty good start at rebuilding her flock...

Interesting behaviors in the young'in I still had....my CCL girl (posted pics a couple of days back) was out chirping a distress call all the big girls went down and were outside the pen watching(interest or concern???)...I think she was calling to her missing flock mates...haven't seen this before.....

Wow! What a busy day! I spent all morning converting our carport into a turkey/chicken shelter. Temporary, of course... I zip-tied the hell outta that thing to make sure that it is as predator proof as I could make it. Tomorrow , I will work on improving it more.

I drove down to pick up turkeys and chicks from @dheltzel. I hope I can give all of them the treatment and protection they deserve. I was expecting smaller chicks, which was silly of me, given the time of year. So it looks like I will have to get my coop together much more quickly than I thought. Mind you, there's still a bathroom I haven't cleaned yet in the new house, but my chickens and turkeys have come home to roost! :gig. Most of our clothes and personal items are still in the garage in boxes, including utensils, plates etc. Priorities, people! :lol:

I think my hubby was surprised when he saw the "clown car effect" when I was unloading the chicks. I think only expected me to bring home 10 chicks. And baby turkeys. Well if you don't ask, you don't know! :old. I don't even remember how many I picked up... :hide

@stake. Thanks again for the little ones. Hope we didn't cause an upset for your other CCLs by taking their brood mates away. I made it home in time to have the last 20 minutes of light for the day. I rushed around so much to get everyone into bed and tucked in safe and sound. The turkeys and the pullets are in the carport (it measures 12 X 20, so it should be enough room) and the chicks are in a large critter cage in the garage, definitely safe from any predators. Time for bed!

The quad of Midget White turkeys are essentially full grown. I believe at least one hen is laying, so you should get small turkey eggs right away. The others:
3 blue egg black sexlinks - hatched 6/3
2 California Greys - hatched 5/27
1 Welbar - hatched 5/20
5 Legbars - hatched 7/22
3 Welbars - hatched 7/22
1 Bielefelder - hatched 7/22
1 Bielefelder - hatched 7/29

The Cali Greys and Sexlinks might very well start laying at 5 months, or sooner, so you should put nestboxes out for them in October. They might not lay as soon since the days are getting shorter, but hopefully they will. Both of those breeds amaze me with their laying ability. The Legbars aren't far behind, but not as consistently day by day.
