Anne:

The pic I posted is of a chook that is a direct sister to the ones I gave you....I do have two younger versions of "Rusty", too....

Cool! Here is Rusty taking a dust bath with his harem.

@dheltzel. Here are the older pullets you gave me. Some of them have reddening wattles. Won't be long now. I have to hurry and get those nest boxes in...

Can you guys tell I am happy to have chickens again? :weee

@AnneInTheBurbs , looks great! That should be a nice coop once you're done with it. What I'm wondering is, what color do you plan to paint it? :)

Thank you both for the reply!
I was going to question about covering with deep litter method, but you beat me to the punch. It looks like rain is coming through later this week, so I'll just keep the hay in our garage for now... Dreams of deep litter will have to wait a bit until some kind of covering is built. I'm just somewhat impatient and am not in love with our Magoo-construction coop/pen, and want the best for my girls.

Unfortunately, I can't take them, but WOW are they lookers!

Thanks for the nice comments on my roosters! :) I have a nice lady set to come pick up the Brahma tonight, sounds like it will be a great home for him, so I am happy even though I'm sad to say goodbye to him.

Meanwhile, the little OE roo is out there crowing right now and giving me heartburn--I just know there will be a neighbor or two getting mad about the crowing. He doesn't seem to crow in the coop so far, so I have only been letting them out between about 10:30 am and 7pm--at least he won't wake anyone up. He just gets more handsome every day, and there is one pullet who seems to be really bonded with him. I wish I could keep him, but it's probably a bad idea....

My Welbars were derived from dark egg laying Welsummers (from Whitmore Farms) and their eggs are indistinguishable from pure Welsummers or (my) Black Copper Marans. The OE's I produced this year are F2's, 3/4 Legbar and 1/4 Welsummer. I was worried they would not be very dark, but the pics my customers have sent me are nice and dark. I'm sure they will fade some, as all dark egg layers do.

I have a single Rhodebar in my Legbar pen to produce light green egg layers, if there is demand for them, otherwise we will eat those eggs.

Is the one you posted the pic of (the three hens outside the door, Welbar, OE, Blue laying black sex link) this 3/4 Legbar 1/4 Welsummer mix? She is really pretty! I would've thought those eggs would be lighter, too, glad to hear they stayed olive. I would love to see any pics of your OE hybrids and their eggs! I am so tempted to keep this OE too that I ended up with, but I know I shouldn't....

Yes, the middle one that looks like a Legbar is only 3/4 Legbar. The Legbar genes are strong WRT looks and the Welsummer genes are strong WRT egg color.

Whatever cheap paint I can find on the clearance rack. Hoping for a dark green, red or blue though. The paint is my last project before the cold sets in, however. I still need to install roosts, make an entrance/ramp for the chickens, and build a mini shed on the back to hold supplies. Maybe I will keep the supplies in the coop... I guess I have room now. :)

No, you won't, it will be too full of chickens! :gig
