I forgot I have 2 (5 gallon) buckets already.  I saw another post where someone had used them as nesting boxes.  Looks like an easy and inexpensive setup.  Just need a few more buckets.  What's the rate again, 1 nesting box per 3 hens?

Thankfully I don't think I'll need pallets, a few pavers should work.  It really is a well draining area where the coop is located, and there is not that much of a distance to the gravel part of the driveway.

Dennis, how big should the turkey nesting boxes be? 24x 24? Should they be closer to the ground or elevated?  Those turkeys sure can fly.  I saw one the other day on my roof above my deck...   :old

Also, did you place the order for Sandhill?

For turkey nests, I just lean a piece of plywood against the wall in their coop. So far, they've loved that.

I got this really weird egg from one of my CCL girls today. It looks like it has a little chimney! Since I'm collecting their eggs for incubation, I'm going to try to hatch it. I sealed the top of the chimney with clear nail polish, just in case it isn't solid. If i get a chick from it, I'm going to have to come up with some kind of clever name.

@fisherlady I was feeding the flock this morning, and Kenny the oldest SPR crowed. From inside, I heard one of the little ones crowing! :lau
The littles are 12 weeks in the next few days.
No egg yet from Dolly (23 weeks).

How about short stack.

The 12 week old must be an overachiever! LOL, mostly we hear croaking/crowing at 14 or 15 weeks, sometimes as late as 18 weeks.
You need to explain to Dolly that you know someone who can supply replacement pullets if she doesn't get her act together soon! :rant

What I also think is adorable is hearing the little 4 and 5 week old cockerels give a miniature version of a rooster's alert chortle when they see something strange or they get surprised by something. Like they are trying to be good little roosters for their broody mamas! :gig

Edited to correct spelling...please just ignore any sleep deprivation induced errors! LOL

I just figured out that Rory and Jaebels are 15 weeks old. Rory is starting to make a more grownup clucky sound but it sounds more quacky. Jaebels (aka Jezebel, my husband's name for her) is still peeping.
