Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hello! My name is Stacie and I live in Harford, PA (no "T" in Harford : ) about 30 min north of Scranton and near the Harford Fairgrounds.

I am thrilled to find a PA group, but hoping to find a Susquehanna (Lackawanna, Wyoming) County group to actually meet other chicken keepers. I have two chicken keeping friends, but I am looking for more, so please say hello! :frow

I love red goldens, just don't have time/space for them right now. But if you hatch some chicks, I might not be able to resist buying some of those. I've heard they do ok with peafowl.

I concur!

Haha! Sounds like you have good system there, I can't even get my husband to feed and water my chickens if I go away for a couple of days.

Don't say that, you'll have us there in no time! :p

My would feed them for me occasionally but I don't let him lol. He used to do it randomly to surprise me and help me out but it's gotten too complicated for him to follow with seperate pens and brooders ect ect...

And hey, what fun would it be to get everyone together to build a big incubator/brooder house lol

My broody is doing such a good job. I lifted her up tonight to see if she had any extra eggs, she had one. But wow! . That girl has picked her chest clean! I was surprised to pick her up and find this naked pink chest! She must have been planning this for a while. Can't wait to candle in a few days! She's gonna bite my fingers off. Lol

I'm so glad she's doing good but don't lose your fingers! Ana is being a wonderful mama (like always) She's so happy to have a baby to care for now. She's only been sitting for 3 months lol.

But speaking of silkies and broodies....I found one of our pullets in the box yesterday morning, and still there last night and this morning. So figure she's getting in the mood to hatch chicks. Her mama, Gracie, is one of our most dedicated broodies. Gracie is 5 years old now (at least, we got her as an adult of unknown age) and her vision seems to be failing, so glad to see her daughters picking up the broody duties!

You know what, I could probably fill that incubator. I'm getting 80 - 90 eggs a day now, and expect twice that (or more) when the weather gets warmer. No idea what I would do with that many chicks though.

WOW! That's a LOT of chickens, haven't seen your place, How many acres are you on?

You're in the middle. I nominate you.

What's your definition of middle? Lol

Where are you? Oh, right, 'Central'. That'll work.;)

Aurora! Stackable brooder? Sweet. :celebrate

I just put my Doe, 'Diva' 1st picture on left, in with our Buck 'Flash' 2nd picture.

Looking forward to some beautiful kids at the end of June! I hope she settles.

Silver penciled rock :)

Ana is one of the Silver Pencil Rocks I gave her a couple of years ago when she needed a couple of day old chicks for a broody. One of my hens had happened to hatch more than I expected and it was a win/win.

Yep. My most stubborn broody came from fisherlady's psycho broody flock lol. My silkies have not even attempted to brood yet lol

Aww, isn't Gracie your most dependable broody? I'm not surpassed that her babies are following in her footsteps :)

You're goats are absolutely adorable! I actualy had a dream with goats in it last night lol. Make sure you pay some kid pics when it happens!

My stackable brooder will be 4 brooders tall, all worth double opening doors in the front and power outlets mounted in the top right corner of each. That's as much planning as we've done lol. It'll be built to fit in this one space in the garage. I think it's 3-4ft x 2 ft.not huge, but should be panty of room. It can double as a sick bay too :) The bottoms will probably be linoleum for easy cleaning.

The entire farm covers about 100 acres. I use maybe 2 - 3 acres. If we wanted to, we could easily put 20 acres into hay and run mobile coops on there for pastured egg production, but I don't have the time and energy to take that on and no one else on the farm has much interest in chickens as a business.

Imagine a large mobile coop with 200 Cream Legbars producing blue eggs, and another with commercial sexlinks for brown eggs. The local grocery sells organic, pastured eggs for $6.99, I think we could get $5 and feel like we are not ripping off anyone.

Aw, that's great! We all remember Gracie, she has a reputation! I couldn't believe my BSL had such a naked chest when I lifted her up. I think she will be an excellent Mama. I wonder if Rusty will be a good supervisor. He is always calling the girls over when there are treats, and warning them of any danger. Anytime he sees the dog (who is very well behaved and couldn't give a fig about the chickens), he alerts the girls.

Wow, that's awesome. Just quit your day job! You don't need to pay your mortgage, haha. That does sound reasonable. I have been asking for $3 a dozen for the eggs and nobody has had any qualms about it. I even included a turkey egg for one customer, who thought that was awesome. He later told me it was a bargain, as he looked it up online and saw that turkey eggs often sell for $2-3 a piece.
