Mine do that a lot. It could be frustration, but I assumed it was part of their display to the hens, maybe to demonstrate their virility, or that they know what to do.
Wish I could ask the hens if that turned them on, but If they could talk to me, I'm sure the conversation would be dominated by a critique of what I feed them.

I found a dead rat today

I've never seen one besides the fancy pet ones before and I have no idea how long it was there. I don't know if maybe the flock killed it or if it was dead a while ago and hidden under the snow. It looked like maybe a juvenile. It was big bit not huge...it makes me nervous.
eeek thank goodness it was dead, but when there is one there is more than one!! set out traps asap!

I know there are lots of forums, but I would rather ask you all this.

Is it possible for an egg to freeze (or partially freeze) and not crack? I have cracked a few eggs throughout the winter and the egg yolk seems thick. I'm not sure how else to describe it. The yolks have ranged a bit from ones that needed extra whisking to be blended to ones that seemed almost solid in consistency.

I wasn't sure if I should eat them or not and I can't even be positive that these eggs were from the coldest days because they didn't crack and they went right into the fridge with the rest. I have my eggs "in order" but we are a week or two behind most of the time.

Any thoughts?
they are fine to eat, if you candle the eggs you can see the cracks. sometimes they can close as quick as you can walk into the house, what was frozen slight open crack then closes and you cant even detect it unless candled.

Good news! Our two newest additions hatched late last night! I was worried about the brown one for a while but when the yellow one hatched, it got the brown one to wake up and finally zip out! Now we're at 3 hatched, 2 more eggs to go.

Definitely frozen but perfectly safe to eat. We tried freezing eggs before to preserve them but didn't break the yolk and had the exact same result.

That's what bothers me :/

Hubby was "sure" that rats didn't live around here and didn't believe me when I said they did. He believes me now. I saved it till this morning so I could show it to him. What kind of traps would you suggest? I can't have anything that could hurt the flock when they free range.

We close flocks in on some nights, and set rat traps or small box traps on those nights and pick them up in the morning before opening the pop doors. Place traps along likely paths and near where you normally hang feeders where they may be searching for scraps. We don't set out traps regularly and a few nights here and there seems to get the same results as doing it every night for a week. Once the primary family group is removed it takes a couple days or more for others to move in unless you have a heavy infestation of varmits.

What I use for rats: https://www.jefferspet.com/products/rodent-cafe-locking-bait-station
and: https://www.jefferspet.com/products/just-one-bite-ii

Keep the bait safely inside the station, and secure it with the posts inside so they can't drag it out. Keep the box of extra bait where nothing can get into it. Rats and mice really like the bait. I have had them dig into the box it came in and gnaw through the plastic wrapper to get to the bait.

Last time I ordered rat bait I bought 40 lbs -- we have a lot of rats . . .
