This little bantam? chick looks like an Old English Game Bantam of Silver Duckwing color. If it is a bantam and TSC sourced from Hoover's Hatchery, then this what it is.
Best, Karen

Thanks! They're pretty! Are these the same? I can't tell them apart lol.

Is there any subject you don't know about?

. Also, my broody chicken is sitting on the eggs like a champ. Nobody gets in her nest so far, and she makes a sneaky dash to take care of herself once a day. Go Cinnamon !
LOL. I know all about Genetic Hackle's because I have been researching them for years, they are #1 on my "most wanted" list. I have a trio on order for this spring, and they will get the royal treatment. I hope to hatch their young and raise a nice flock - planning to have them for sale in 2018, and also start breeding experiments to get those genetics into some of the other breeds I like. maybe a genetic hackle Welbar will exist someday, where those gorgeous roos will be in high demand as pets for people that tie flies. They can go pull some feathers from their roo and let him earn his keep.

Wow! They are cute. I've managed to resist when at TSC, but your pics are making me reconsider.

It's lightly snowing here. I think we have maybe 2 inches. Hope everyone is hanging in there!

wow, I just measured 11 inches on my deck. I am NOT looking forward to trekking out to the coops. I spent yesterday tarping until my hands were raw. I left everyone enough food, but I'm sure their water is frozen by now, so off I go before the power goes out..

Delawares are so pretty and easy to breed for color. Basically, they are the same as Light Sussex with the barring gene added I . Based on the Wheaten allele, they don't need any balancing of the under color to get correct top color. The Breed needs more people to champion it right now as the folk currently working with it are doing a great job and need more people to start raising Delawares.

Best, Karen
Agreed, Delawares were hugely important in the commercial broiler industry before the introduction of the Cornish/Rock crosses. The Delaware hens were crossed to New Hampshire roos (another very large bird when bred properly). The resulting sexlinked chicks grew large fast and made excellent layers, capons and broilers. It is a shame that no one does that anymore to keep that heritage alive.

The reason I asked about them is that I know Whitmore Farm in MD has worked with Delawares for years, bring them back toward their former glory, but this is their last year, they are retiring. I considered getting some of their stock but have no room or time to do them right. I'm hoping someone gets their flock and continues their work.

A member is visiting from Alabama with her daughter. They were excited about the snow. Now... Not so much! LOL!
One of the ducks they were supposed to take is injured. Not sure what happened. Anyone have any ideas on fixing it somehow? If it has to be destroyed, is there any reason I can't have the meat? I think I can make time to process one bird if I have to kill it anyway.

Where/how is it injured?
