Just moved 315 eggs into hatchers!

Hatching chicks is so fun. I'm a little behind on the sales side of things and starting to get overrun with chicks. I need to find some "dealers" a ways away from me to resell my Cream Legbars.

In sadder news, the coons got extra hungry with the snow and found a way into a pen, killing 4 or 5 pullets.

Surprises are good!  If they don't have feathers on their feet, I would guess Old English Game bantams, the most common colors with the chipmunk stripes are Silver Duckwing and Black Breasted Red (sometimes called "BB Red"). Look those up for pictures of the adults.

So sorry to hear, I can only imagine how bold they are getting right now with the heavy snow providing cover for many of their normal prey.

X2  You can also skewer fresh vegetables or fruits on a string and hang them so the birds can peck at and eat them.

Here are my babies today! They are all much more active. Can't get over how tiny the Bantams are. Wish I knew what they are. I'm not good with surprises! Going to look up how to do the heating pad brooder for these guys I think.

Aw, so cute! The bantams are so tiny! I had a broody hen hatch out 12 bantams last year. It was so funny seeing her trying to keep track of them all!

I kept my flock in today again, although two turkeys snuck out and spent the day holding their feet up. When I put everyone to bed tonight, the broody Mama was up on the roost, and her poults were underneath the broody turkey hen. Thankfully the broody turkey hen doesn't seem to care, or enjoys their company. The Mama broody seems to be okay with it as well.

I moved my little house chickys into the atrium where it is a bit chillier, and changed their cage to a bigger one. They seem to be more active, I wonder if the other room was too warm for them. They did seem to be sleeping a lot. I thought perhaps this room might be too cool for them, but so far I have heard only happy little peeps. I'll have to grab a picture tomorrow of my African Grey sitting on the cage inspecting the chicks. He's such a snoop.

My girls were SO pleased and surprised when I visited them in their hen house today with treats. They definitely don't like walking on that scary white stuff.

Mine are all sick and tired of being penned up. They want out to roam in the worst way but not out in that snow.

I think Ana is slowly losing interest in her baby. She doesn't fuss over her much anymore but she's still keeping her warm at night at least. Her little baby this time around is the sweetest, broody raised baby I've ever met. She's totally spoiled and greets me every morning expecting to be held and hand fed a handful of feed just for her lol

Raccoons!!

If you are looking for "dealers" away from you, Freehling Farms near Pittsburgh is the place I mentioned that resells hatchery chicks for the local market, in addition to breeding some of their own. They seem to pride themselves on a good selection of interesting breeds, and may well be interested in some good CCL chicks. I have not gotten chicks from them yet, but one of my neighbors has, and had nice things to say. They are on Facebook.

I'm still hoping you may have a silver ameraucana pullet old enough to sex by the time of the chicken train (in addition to the few others that are sexable at hatch), but with 315 eggs in the hatchers now, I understand that taking a few chicks won't help you too much with your overrun!

Sounds like she is getting ready to cut the apron strings. How old is the chick? Most of our hens start distancing themselves around the 6 to 7 week mark. I am glad she is still keeping the chick warm at night. The last group we had in the pencil pen ended up being adopted by the rooster for evening roost warming. Luckily there were only 3 of them and the rooster was very tolerant.
