Brooding can be a year round event if the hens are in the mood...we currently have a hen with 4 week old chicks (silver pencil rock), 2 hens with 2 week old chicks(both silkies), 1 hen with 1 week old chicks (jersey giant) and a silkie mix due tomorrow and an EE due tomorrow.

A silkie/EE mix would be super cute, feathery legs and fluffy cheeks!

Speaking of which, my eggs are due to hatch tomorrow. Hopefully they do early so I can get these chicks to you. The poults are hatching now and bowling in there :/ I may pull them out before bed to minimize that.

Newbie question..will she lay any more eggs while being broody? She's a black silkie and I only have a blue silkie roo. I love her temperament and would love more.

I am off tomorrow, so just keep us updated on hatch and we can meet you anytime from mid morning till Sunday. Our schedule will float around the chick hatch,no problem.

Yes, but I'm trying to ignore it...

Parkesburg, PA TSC has a bin of buff Orps and Autralorps for only $1....just sayin'

If only I lived closer!

. My silkie is doing the same thing tonight. I thought with the cold weather she wouldn't become broody. Let's see how she does tomorrow. I will let her be, I even gave her a EE egg I found in another next box. I wouldn't mind more silkies. should the EE egg hatch, it will be a silkie EE mix. Need some of this snow to melt. It was a treck to the coop

X2! My first broody hatched out her chicks on Dec. 25th. They were fertile eggs from a friend, it was the virgin hatching!

If she's truly broody, she won't lay anymore eggs. She may even plant herself on an empty nest. Rose had duck that sat on a block of wood because that was all she could find!

Unfortunately I have never had a truly broody hen continue to lay, their hormones swap over to conserve their energy for the long sit and chick raising.

As you get familiar with the hen's patterns you will come to learn how to plan egg gathering for her. Our silkies are very dependable and I can darn near predict their next broody cycle by within 5 days once they give up their current broods. With that in mind we collect hatching eggs to be set when we expect them to brood. It's not a perfect system, but helps us gather the desired eggs before they quit laying.

Hubby let me get a couple more. Said if there were any others that I wanted to get it over with all at once lol. My daughter wanted Silkies soooo

Just said Bantam Silkie Mix. I still have to read up. Thinking they're all white? Some have feathered feet and some have fluffier heads. Don't know what that means but I see a lot of pictures in my future lol.

Very cute, the bottom chick in the picture in the upper right looks like it will end up being buff. And chick in lower left picture also looks to be either buff or a silvery color, though it may be the lighting. Usually the chick's colors will change hues multiple times until it really shows it's 'adult' look
