Long time reader, first time (or close to) poster checking in from Lehigh Valley (Allentown). We have a small flock. Previously we bought started pullets, this time we went with day old chicks that are now 4 weeks old. Looking forward to getting them outdoors!
So today to brighten our week we finally let everyone out to free range! The RIR we got with the house have never been out before. Everyone was great we had 15 ducks, 16 hens, two roos, 3 dogs, 2 goats and 2 kids running around yard. I drove past my house twice just to look at them from road lol. My little roo tried picking fight with a Muscovy and Oliver my RIR roo walked up hill went into porch and knocked on the front door! Hedwig went out with everyone had I found out whos picking on her so I'll try taking that one out for a bit I think. And my hubby is finally driving home!!!!!!!!!!!!°

First thing this morning, I had to pull my lavender ameraucana roo from the breeding pen. He is now restricted to weekly visitation to the girls. I was wondering why my egg count from that pen had been dropping so dramatically. I caught him in the act the other day breaking an egg and caring the girls to come eat it. Hopefully they have enough sense to not eat the eggs on their own :/
i've never done it. I would recommend candling the eggs upon arrival and look for loose air cells, let the eggs 'settle' for at least 24 hours before giving them to the hen. Good luck!
