DH:

What Breed are they? I kinda remember a 'Fly tying' breed somewhere????
They are sometimes called "fly tie". They aren't really a breed, it's like asking what breed of chickens lay blue eggs, there are several breeds (and lots of mixes, hybrids, etc) that have that trait. This long hackle feather trait can apparently be bred into other breeds, it has just never been available for ornamental use, they are closely held to protect their market. The breeders regard them as utility birds with high price tags as long as the market can be controlled. I believe they have potential as ornamental birds, but it's neat just to own chickens with such rare genetic qualities.

Well, I came home and she had passed. It looks like she had hurt her leg also, it was greenish on the skin. Perhaps the infection spread quickly? I suppose that's why she had her legs splayed this morning. I cremated her in the fire for bio security reasons. I'm sad that she died, but I'm glad it wasn't the other one, because had given me fertile eggs, whereas this one had not. Also glad she didn't suffer long.

In better news, Dads procedure went very smoothly.

And the new chicks are doing well! :)

I'm so sorry you lost her :( but, I'm glad that your dad's procedure went well!

He's absolutely stunning. And I thought my one CCL boys saddle feathers were long and flowing. They're longer than most but still not as long as that handsome guy's are. I'll have to get a good picture of him. Even hubby mentioned today how long his feathers are and he never notices stuff like that lol.

Stunning bird ! is that a creole (sp?)? what breed is that ? it's beautiful!
Hey, is John Buddie still breeding Collies out there at Tartanside ?
Best,
Karen

One of my projects will be a Legbar with long hackle and saddle feathers, plus a rose comb. I hate the frostbite issues with Legbars and see no point (get it? LOL) in the single combs. The new roo has the right genetics for that. I may lose the cream, at least for a while, but if I can get the good crests back and keep the blue egg color, I will be happy.

Yes, the cockeral and one pullet are Crele. The other pullet is cuckoo (black barred). It should be easy to get crele and cuckoo roos from those pairings.

I am not familiar with Tartanside. But then, I'm not native to this area and not strong on the geography.

Guess what I found in the incubator last night?

2 Welsh Harlequins. They surprised me by hatching 2 days early. I should have lots more over the next month if anyone local is looking to add duck eggs to their diet. These are like Khaki Campbells in laying ability, but prettier.

I'm still having problems with my boy girl ratio and was thinking about adding WH. They would be same size as KC/Rouen right? I really want some Cayuga girls for the dark eggs but I think they are too big. Wish I was closer! Very cute!

They came from Khaki Campbells, so I assume they are very close. These are my first ducks, so I'm not that experienced with the different breeds. Metzer Farms has a page about them, and from the description, they seem like the perfect duck: http://www.metzerfarms.com/WelshHar...=15281571&BirdType=Duck&Breed=Welsh Harlequin I believe the parents of mine are from Metzer.

I hope they sell well, I have a bunch of eggs incubating and don't want to raise them because I don't have adequate housing for the adults. They are great layers though and duck eggs get a nice premium over chicken eggs for eating, so who knows . . .

Yeah I'm selling my duck eggs for 5 bucks a dozen. When they first started laying I gave some to my customers at work to try and now I sell pretty much all of them as quickly as I can fill egg cartons. Pays for feed anyway!

Do you have space for more ducks? Maybe somehow I could get some ducklings for you. Especially if I figure out how to sex them accurately, that would be a good way to add some more revenue.
