A couple questions for u guys. #1-Should I buy a Coop with a run or without one? #2-and how big of a free range area should I make and what type of wire and should I use bird netting for the top? Thanks guys

Buy the best you can afford and for long term use stay away from the Tractor Supply types (they don't hold up)... many of us convert the 'amish type' sheds for durability and versatility. Full height sheds allow easier human access for cleaning but the smaller ones are easier to tuck into the corner of a yard, so your situation should determine the best fit for you. In Pa. climates I prefer the 4 ft per bird inside the coop and 10 ft per bird outside. During harsh weather the birds may literally be 'cooped up' for extended times and being crowded isn't good. Plan for about twice what you think you will want since most folks end up with more birds than they originally planned, lol.
The outside run construction should be done based on the predators of the area...chain link or heavy goat fencing is good with smaller hardware cloth around at least the bottom 18" is good with either heavy bird netting or chicken wire over the top. If you live near weasels or mink you will want to consider the hardware cloth over all of the sides and top since the can get through very small openings and they climb well.

For daytime free ranging you can create any type of fencing that will stand up to neighborhood dogs and either use poles to hold up bird netting for hawk protection or make sure there are plenty of places for your birds to hide under if they see an overhead threat.

There are no 'predator proof' set ups, but you can minimize losses by planning for 'worst case scenarios'.

Anyone close to Pottstown interested in some ducklings? My advance sale for this past week got postponed, so I have 10 extra Welsh Harlequin duckling, really cheap (or cheep, as the case may be). I'm expecting a shipment of chicks from Sandhill on Wednesday and am hoping to clear out a brooder before then. They are soooo cute too, you would really like them, even your spouse or SO will be taken with these little cuties.

LOL, they aren't as cute as she is, but being the runners up to Duckling is still pretty cute.
If you were closer, you know I'd bring them over and give them directly to her, knowing you'd fall for that easily.

I had to chuckle at your description of events after reading no real harm was done...broodies are a force of nature for sure, and I don't have ducks, so I can only imagine how much more intense that would make it. Sounds like separate corners are called for though, since eggs would suffer in the fray. Though as often as you hatch I would just graft them after a couple of weeks so they would quit hogging a nest box. :)

That's most likely what I'll ends up doing. Right now, Ebony is or in the yard wandering around and Ana is parked on the nest lol

I have muscovies hatching in 2 weeks... you know you want more lol

I haven't photo bombed in a while so I'm overdue :)

Ana and Cocoa, sharing the nest. This was a week or so ago when all the girls were just thinking about it. Cocoa has given it up since she doesn't want to share. I'm not sure where she's hiding eggs now.

Pebbles was being a protective mama. Except, she adopted this older poult when I let them loose in the coop. She had a tiny little 1 week old CCL cockerel under her too

The other two poults that were released decided that they were big kids and roosted with the grown ups lol

Welbar babies!

The goslings are getting big. I'm almost positive that they're African and not Toulouse. They're just starting to get their first little feathers and are almost 3 weeks old. They love to hang out with us outside and play in the grass.

Sprinkles the turkey poult is getting big too!

Ana seems to have won the nest box battle from this morning. She is proudly sitting there with all the stolen duck fluff

And Ebony will now have to find another spot to nest...unless she picks up the fight again tonight

Hi,
well it's raining,
we have a tornado watch in Westmoreland County and tomorrow is hatch day. a whole lot of pipping going on there in that in that incubator. it looks like today and tomorrow will be very productive. I'm really excited. I sold all the Crossbred chicks. I'll just keep my light Sussex .
Best,
Karen

Tornado watch here also. It just now started raining. The power's been out 3 times already so I'm curious how this will work. I'm not even going to try to turn the computer back on until after the storms pass. I'll just use the tablet lol.

Everyone stay safe!
