Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that our dear 'Stake' -Tom Egan is gone. I heard from his father today (we grew up in the same small town -Ridley Park, PA). He passed from Lung Cancer last Monday. Those of you that don't know him- We, here on the PA Thread, were family to him. He never married and had no children, his animals were his children. His profile pic is of a rescue dog that passed years ago and that he still agonized over loosing. He spent hours with his birds, knew each and everyone of them and their quirks intimately. He made the BEST Hard Cider you've ever tasted -MotorcycleChick and I can attest to that. He was extremely humble, NEVER giving advice without making sure that he did not offend by ending with 'my two cents' and I will miss him fiercely.

True to form, looking through his last posts here - ALL were responding to someone with a question or concern, offering help or his 'two cents' of advice. I wish there were more like him.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Please pass our condolences onto his family. He was such a kind soul and loved his animals for sure. He was kind enough to give me some chicks last year to help restart my flock, one of which is my spectacular rooster Rusty Shackleford. Poor Tom, I had no idea he was ill either. I wonder how long he had been ill.

I forget, what ask eggs did I send you? (Color wise). Definitely looks penciled but maybe bearded too?

Oh no! He will be terribly missed :( He was always a fountain of good advice and when our dog passed away in February, he messaged me to comfort me and talk about his rescue dog. I for one will miss hearing his "two cents" of advice :(

Thanks, she is gorgeous. Guess we will have to wait until she is older, I have no idea what you sent anymore. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast yesterday.

Two of my young turkeys (the bourbon reds) started having a serious death match today! It was crazy, I had to physically separate them. After a few hours, I put them back together for bed time with no problems. I really hope it was just a one time thing...

I remade my roosts today. I had been meaning to do it for a while, but other projects needed attention first. These roosts are much improved, with widely spaced perches, sanded 2x4s, and a very sturdy base. I felt bad my Tom was having a hard time balancing at night, since he is such a big boy, and the precious perches were too close. Sorry for the dark pictures, but they all seem to be using it well! Oh, and the middle pic is of some of the babies hanging out on the dog crate I have in there now as a broody breaker. :D

Next time, I would let them battle it out. By seperating them, you probably just postponed it. They will settle their differences. Every now and then, Eve and Sweet Pea start arguing ams will fight and url at each other for a day or so then they make up and are friends again lol.

They were like having a death match though! They had a ache others heads in each other's beaks. Screaming so bad that some of the chickens tried to break it up. Have you seen it that bad before? Do you think it means thy are both males?

Yes, I've often seen it like that. One will give in to the other and the pecking order will be reordered :) As long as you don't see blood, I'd let it go. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're both males but makes teens to do it more often than females.

We went through this a few months back. It's truly a very sad time for everyone. A dog is such an integral part of a family it is proper to mourn them as such. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Thank you, we're at least thankful for the long holiday weekend to process the death. He would not have liked the fireworks anyway. I think our last remaining dog will be integral to moving on. The one that passed had been deaf for a little over a year, and his overall quality of life was slowly waning. It was just really hard to watch him go through multiple organ failure and the existential crisis that comes with death. I feel more at peace now that he's not in pain.

What sad news :( Tom was truly always willing to help, and give advice, I depended on him many times in the beginning.
Condolences to his family, he will be missed here!
