Okay gang I need some help. The Animal Rescue League (of my wonderful county) apparently has a Swan that they are going to be putting up for adoption as soon as "She" (They have no idea how old or what sex or species this swan is!) is healed up from her chest injury. The people that brought her in said she was a stray, she has no mate, andddd I'm going to be looking at her tomorrow. And probably adopting her.
I get the gist of vent sexing waterfowl so if necessary with an extra pair of hands I can do that. (I really don't want to but I might have to). However! I don't know how to age swans (or any waterfowl for that matter). And I'm really really really worried about this swan because its mate is no where to be found. I'm also worried about what species it is because if its a native species someone's going to be fined if not going to take a trip to jail. Especially if we find out that this so called "stray" isn't a stray.
I would contact Tri-State Bird Rescue.

They can answer your questions, especially about the legality of keeping a native species.
They are located about 45 minutes from me and probably are the best place for your swan--although I sympathize about wanted a swan of your own! I know that laws vary state by state and in Ohio Whistling Swans , for example, are protected. I personally would LOVE a pair of swans, but your concerns are valid--and you need a very very large pond to keep a swan healthy, even if it was a bred in captivity- legal to keep in Pennsylvania- bird.
